    Some of you agree...

Fortuner, Montero Sport, Corolla Altis, Grand Starex, any car that is popular in the Philippines...

    wait...

teka, some of you meron kayong hilig sa mga surplus vans galing Japan or Korea.

Why do most Pinoy car addicts love surplus Japanese/Korean vans?

mura kasi e...but, siguro after a few months, may nakalagay na sa mga surplus vehicles na "For Sale". you know what it means...hindi sya reliable. better get a second hand vehicle locally sold or, if you have lots of money, get a brand new one.

    Most popular car?

Kung pinakasikat ang paguusapan.. basta marinig ang name na Ferrari or Benz or BMW, napapawow ang mga tao sa paligid.

    Kung sa paramihan naman...

    Jeep... mula 1960s(ata)? Nandiyan na..
Volkswagen (old model)... nung bata ako, lagi kami naglalaro paramihan ng pendong pag makakita ng Volkswagen.

Sa daan ngayon, ang maraming nakikita mo (aside from Jeep) sa daan (in no particular order):
    - Toyota Vios
    - Toyota Altis
    - Toyota Innova
    - Hyundai Getz
    - Honda Civic

    Most Popular Car?

Corolla Big Body ... Car eh

    Pero kung most popular vehicle

Tamaraw Fx, why? a vehicle that started the AUV trend that almost obliterated car sales in its Hey Day and is still seen plying different routes in the Metro. Though I'm not Fan...

Based on car sales, I'd say a Toyota. I just do not know if the Vios has overtaken the Corolla in overall sales.

The Corolla AE101 is almost immortal. Been seeing droves of them on the road from the mid 90s to the early 2000s whether it be the XL, XE or GLi. It was the time that almost all cabs and police vehicles were Corollas and most of the private sedans on the road were Corollas. Its numbers on the road may have decreased now, but its still so good that I haven't gone by a day outside without seeing one. There really isn't any Corolla model after it that equals it in numbers on the road during its time (or even well past its time in this case). If the AE101 Corolla is near immortal then the L300 is truly immortal. How many presidents has it been through? Been riding in these since I was a kid. Its so popular that it'd become a household name. Hell even its competitors become related to it. With people who don't know much about cars, any car with a passenger box behind be it IPV, Ranger, Hilux, H100 or K2700 is "yung parang L3". I really don't know why it still sells so well now. Is it because many people don't know that there are other options at all? Even with the facelift, its got this ancient looking dashboard with square gauges, no less, squeaky suspension, pathetic aircon no matter how many vents its got and a prehistoric engine to go with it. With so many newer offerings, MMPC could have at least put a Delica head on it...

I started noticing cars in the mid-90's, at about the same time I could read, and boy, it was a Corolla-fest. From my observations:

    • AE92 Corollas were abundant in the mid-90's. In fact, we've cycled through 3 of those - 1 in red, 2 in silver. However, not much of them were taxi models. I guess I was already past the era where AE92s and Geminis dominated the fleet scene.
    • AE101 Corollas were even more abundant. As a kid, I had this unexplainable liking for the car. We had Civics then (EG and EK) but I craved for this car, seeing so many of it on the road. Whether for hire or private, people bought these in droves. I would bet my dog that this is still the best-selling car in the Philippines, if you combine AE92, AE101 and AE111 sales. Though the taxi versions are slowly becoming extinct due to pathetic maintenance by brash drivers and the riding public being more akin to the newer models, this is still a very, very common sight on the road.
    • The Tamaraw FX, from my toddler years up until now, is probably the only vehicle that rivals Corolla sales. AE101 vs the pre-Revo FX, I'm not actually sure which sold more. But what I'm certain is that they both outsold the competition by a big margin.
    • EG/EK Civics, though not as common as the Corolla, were actually very common as well. In fact, not counting the taxi fleet Corollas, I bet the sales of these compared to the Corolla isn't that far behind.
    • The 1st-gen ZZ Altis continued the Corolla's fame, but gone was the superior dominance of this car compared to the competition, and this was due to...
    • The Vios. The emergence of the subcompact was spearheaded by this car (the City was first, but never captured this much of a market) and is the most ubiquitous car in the country right now. In fact it's actually sickening already. I would assume the way I feel about the Vios, well it's 1.3 versions at least, is the same way people felt with the Corolla AE101 back when I was a kid. Though of course like the way I saw the 1.6 GLi differently, I see the 1.5G a decent car despite its commonness.
    • I do have to note though, that though we are in a third world country, I see, on average, 5-10 Land Cruiser LC200s per day. That's at least 20M everyday worth of Land Cruiser. All the rich folks have unanimously chosen a single SUV.

It's funny how almost all the best-selling cars in the country are Toyotas. Currently though, I think these are the best-sellers:

Sub-sub-compact: Hyundai Getz, has outsold the Picanto methinks.
    Subcompact: Vios. Duh.
Compact: FD Civic. The 2nd-gen ZZ is close though, but only because lots of taxi fleets buy it.
    Mid-size: Camry. Duh.
    Compact SUV: Hyundai Tucson
Mid-size SUV: It's a toss-up between the Montero and the Santa Fe. Though I think it's still the Montero. In any case, the time of the Fortuner has passed.
    MPV/AUV: Innova. Duh.
    Van: Hyundai Starex.

I've seen that people say there are a lot of SiRs in the country. I really hope that's the case because I do plan to get my hands on one once I save up enough. Hopefully there'd still be a stock one running around. I have this notion that there were at most just a thousand of them sold, and that's not what I'd call plentiful.

I was a bit bored on my way home a while ago, and I decided to compare which car was more popular commercially, the AE101 Corolla or the Vios. I counted all AE101s I saw, as well as 1st and 2nd gen Vios-es.

    Route was Katipunan - P.Tuazon - EDSA.

    AE101 - 68
    1st gen. Vios - 20
    2nd gen. Vios - 41

So the AE101 actually outnumbers both generations of Vios combined. It's still the king of the sedans. Not sure how it stacks up against the Tamaraw FX though.
