150-175 budget, what are my choices?
Hi, ive been reading some of the threads, many asking a similar question, but with a slightly higher budgets(ea. 200k). My budget is, on the other hand, only 150-175 k at most. what would you suggest i get? I was considering a 97 city or a 94 hatchback, ok ba mga un? any other suggestions? thanks. looking forward to your inputs.

94 hatchback bad buy. that thing cost 180k new! you're paying through the nose for the perceived high resale value.

cars that old are all the same din naman kesyo honda or toyota or kia yan. if it's that old it's bound to be full of problems.

so buy the cheapest one you can get (na hindi ginawang taxi..) para may budget to fix it.

i'd go with a box type mazda 323 with the 1.3L carb engine. makakakuha ka niyan at 100k or so. then you'll have lots of cash left over to fix the suspension and any mechanical issues with it.

if you get a corolla AE101 ubos yung budget mo tapos you'll have nothing left over to fix it with.

of course if you're thinking WTF mazda 323 box type that's sooo lame well... you can go non-lame with your budget (e.g. you can get a 1996 accord for that budget) pero wala ka nang pang-ayos ang kakainin ka ng buhay by the fuel bills and matitirikan ka every so often.

^^agree ako kay orly.. when getting any 2nd hand car. kailangan talaga ng mga around 20k-50k extra. di mo alam kung ano masisira.. kung wala ka ng pang-gastos, you're gonna be left with a two ton paperweight.

Kalawangin (daw) ang City. Besides a 1997 City * 175K is probably a high-mileage unit.

You can probably go for a Toyota Corolla XE, EE100 body (the 1993-97). Just be sure you don't get an ex-taxi.

Why not buy a brand-new Suzuki Alto? the 175K is a 50% down-payment, you would pay a monthly of 4,300 over 5 years. At least it has a 3-year warranty and so on.

Hondas, from what I've seen in the classifieds, are ridiculously overpriced. Toyota is a good choice.

Remember to buy as low below your budget as possible and save some of that money for maintenance and gas.

You can also check Nissan Sentra series 3 units. A 1996 model with a 1.6L efi engine would cost you around P180K. It is also possible to find later model units of the Sentra series 3 that would not go beyond 200K like the "super touring", GTS or even the first generation Exalta SLA or STA (although kinda rare).

Corolla GLI 94-95 .. all power (power windows, lock, power steering) , lakas ng hatak, siguradong private car, swak sa budget nyo.. andami pang mods nun..


problema kase sa xe/xl may mga ex-taxi na ginawang private car.. so di daw ma trace yun pag naging private car na.. at least pag GLI sure ka na private car yun.. mura pa din ang parts and marami..

The Sentra is okay... but I wouldn't go looking at the fully-loaded models... at the age of car you're looking at, some Sentras will have fairly extensive electrical/electronic glitches (Exalta, I'm looking at you! )

The Honda Hatchback is very old for the money. The high price is due to the demand for the Hatch body, but there's nothing very special there. At this age, you're looking at replacing the radiator and all cooling fixtures (fragile on Civics of this year), as well as coping with extensive rust problems with the roof and fenders (the roof, in particular, is a uniquely poor spot on these Civics). It's not all bad... the rest of the car holds up well, and it's a nice car to fix up, but you'll end up spending about 30-50k over the asking price.

The City is also pretty over-priced, but mechanically sound. The rust issue is ridiculous, though. I started seeing rusting 1st generation City sedans only two or three years after they came out. But as long as the car you get has no rust, it's a decent buy.

Corollas... as long as they're well cared for, you pretty much can't go wrong with them. But they're not indestructible. They still suffer some of the same problems as other cars. Check the engine, suspension, brakes and electricals carefully. Corollas are sturdy, but it's not impossible to kill them through poor maintenance.

I say: make that a 200k budget, and buy something at around 150-160k. If you can, repair everything that needs repairing as soon as you buy it. (especially the radiator and its hoses). If you choose not to, that money hedge will still give you peace of mind, believe me.

This is what I mean by buying something at the edge of your budget.

Then the gasoline consumption will eat you alive (a car that old will almost certainly have idle problems and sensor problems, causing 6km/L fuel mileage). If you drive only 30km/day that's 5L/day or 4000/month or 50K/year just for fuel.

Don't get me started with the $$$ EXPENSIVE $$$ parts of these elderly mid-size cars.

Trust me, I know the pain.
