Hello tsikooters!! I need advice, I'm planning to join a bidding of a 95 and 96 toyota corolla gli. According to the contact person these are company owned cars used by the Managers of the company. Di raw pwede road test sasakyan, as is where is daw ang mga yun, di ko lang natanong kung pwede iistart. Given the situation, pano po ba makikita ang defects ng sasakyan without undergoing road tests.

What questions should I ask?

One good way is to look at lots of specimens of the particular model you want. That way you can compare if something is not right on a particular unit.

Go to those big warehouse style used-car dealerships to at least have a general idea. Even if wala kang balak na kuning unit sa kanila.

When buying a car lalo pag used na, the rule of the thumb is, always TEST DRIVE before buying. You won't know anything about the car unless you get the feel of it. Malay mo baka pag bili mo nyan katok na pala makina or you drive 1 block and the suspension pieces fall apart di b?

yup sa dami ng choices sa used cars ngaun, stay away from company cars or cars used for public purposes unless it's so so super cheap ...

even it's so cheap, your mindset should be to resell it. hindi ko pa din gagamitin yan kahit less than 100k na 95/96 corolla

whatever your decission my tips would be as follows:

    1) Body damage - use a magnet, idikit mo around the car...pagmakapal ang masilya hindi ito didikit.
    2) Frontal collision or collisions na delikado - I usually check the front part of the chasis...newly painted, welding na wala sa puwesto indicates that nagkaroon ito ng matinding collision.
    3) Radiator na metal - this model use to have plastic radiators as stock (correct me if I'm wrong)...so kung metal na yan baka nag-overheat na yan.
    5) Alignment ng doors, hood and trunk. Yun space should be equal or properly aligned.
    6) Wear and tear ng gulong...a properly maintained car will have good tire wear...unless pinalitan ang gulong ng luma.
    7) If you can start/run the engine, any improper sound or noise is an indication of engine condition. While running, open the oil cap, hindi dapat tumatalsik ang oil or emits smoke for the oil cap opening. Then open the radiator cap, the water should be moving but not too violently that water splashes out of the cap. Oil should not be present sa radiator water.
    8) Oil from the dip stick should not be "dirty" or brown colored. Ganun sa brake fluid and power steering oil.
    9) All belts should still be in good condition - not cuts or splice.
    10) All lights and accessories are running - aircon, radio, auxiliary fan.
    11) Sa suspension, push it down and should immediately go back in original position and no bouncing.
    12) Fuel filter (if plastic na see-through) should show "clean" fuel.
    13) All plastic/rubber hose should have no visible cracks.
    14) Paint should still be in semi-good condition.

kung less than half lang pumasa...mahina ang P100k to have that repaired.

+1 ako dyan sir. Very good explanation. For the body damage, pwede mo rin gamitin yung katok method. Also as much as possible kung makakakuha ka ng all original paint, much better kahit medyo dull na mukhang di naalagaan ng wax ok lang, usually libag lang yan, you can always have it detailed later and lilitaw uli ang ganda nyan basta factory paint; kasi usually kung may retoke na yung car di tumatagal, just for the sake na mabenta lang yung car. How to check? Pag binilad mo sa araw yung car (yung mataas na araw like 10am to 3pm na naka-ilaw dun sa side na gusto mo tingnan), lumayo ka konti and tignan mo mabuti ang body panels, pag may retoke na kita mo medyo iba ang kulay nya from the rest of the car.

Wow. That was pretty comprehensive. Still best to bring a mechanic though methinks.

When buying 2nd hand car mas maganda kung direct seller. Usually kung may hidden defect yan di papayag seller sasabihin kaagad niyan "as is where is" kung tiwala kasi siya sa maintenance niya papayag yan at magiging honest sa mga defects kung meron man.

I would not recommend buying a 10 year old company car...I say 95-100% of these cars are beaten to death...Our company vechicles are just a couple years old and they seem to run like they are ten year old cars (constantly needing repairs)...

you can't spot them without test driving them... in fact, even while test driving them, you cannot spot them asap. lalabas at lalabas ang problema nyan as time goes on.

and yes, if you can avoid them, don't buy them. for sure, dami ng problema nyan.....

unless you can get them for 50k each....

how to spot defects in as is where is cars
