Corolla LoveLife XE 00mdl vs Lynx 00mdl vs Lancer GSR

I'm leaning towards getting any of the cars mentioned above, can you please share some insights, feedbacks, negative or violent reactions regarding any of the cars mentioned above.

Aside from the 3 cars listed in the title, here are some of the cars that I'm considering:
1. Lancer 97mdl Pizza
2. Corolla XE 97mdl
3. Civic EG 93mdl

Here are some of the basis for selection of car to purchase:
1. Easier to maintain
2. Cheaper to maintain
3. Fuel Efficient
Etc.

kalampagaing suspension? what can you expect from a 13 y/o car? remedy? change the suspension and voila, tapos ang problema. it seems you're opting for a GSR variant. compared to Corolla XE (w/c is carb type), the GSR variant is already EFi and E10 compatible. i don't know if the Honda EG (ESi variant let's say) is already E10 compatible even it's already EFi. AFAIK, cars from Honda from 1999 and up are the only e10 compatible.

if i were you, i'll get the 2000 MX or 2001 GLS variant. but the GSR and GLXi variants are suffice.

Dude, I know. :D We used to own a 97 XE (ngayon asa tito ko na siya), ang dali nga imaintain. Kaya nga 97~01 XE models ay asa top 3 selections ko. Plan kasi namin gamitin ang kotse as a weekend vehicle to travel to Pangasinan (back and forth), and sometime pang work narin. Around 12~14kpl (at best) din ang consumption ng XE, at isa pa. Grabe, nagkalat ang mekaniko sa isang street dito sa Dagupan. hehe. Halos lahat alam kumalikot ng Corolla. Pero, lets see kung ano pa ang ibang mapagpilian.

Kung Fuel Efficient at cheap parts, Corolla XE na. Kung maporma ang hanap mo GSR Lancer na, meron din mabibiling parts kaya lang mahal lang ng konti. Sa Ford limited lang ang parts.

in my experience, the corolla XE is not as fuel efficient as most people think.

it's a carburettor equipped car. at sobrang kupad. halos walang torque at hirap ang makina on straight acceleration (mabigat kasi body nya, i think).

big body corollas are now too old. unless you find one in mint condition (dito sa may amin may nagpapacarwash 1.3 XL parang galing sa factory pa rin), you'd best stay away.

if you're not particular about looks or performance and just want a comfy commuter... i suggest a 4 door sedan kia pride (hell, you can get an a/t and it will still consume about as much as 1.3 corolla). maluwag sa loob, cheap to run, cheap to buy. pag bumigay na, you can chuck it sa backyard and use it as a chicken coop, hehehe.

The Toyota still uses a carburetor and doesn't make much power. Civic EG is very old already... I'd take the EFi EK Civic LXi or even better, VTi if your budget permits. Lancer? If there's the Civic, I wouldn't consider it, but I'd say that it is quite a good car in its own right and I like its styling more than the Cedia generation that succeeded it. You may also consider the same era Nissan Sentra, its got the cool aircon, nice engine performance and good suspension tuning too (the ones before the Exalta came out).

Whichever one is in the best condition and available with a manual tranny.

I don't like GSR INVECS transmissions, I distrust old Lynx ATs and an XE Corolla just ain't the same level as the other two in terms of power or convenience.

Of the three, the Lynx is the nicest to drive, and has the best seating space. (GSR rear seats are narrow and tight... Lovelife rear seats lack legroom) It has its faults, (the most major being the cam-position sensor) but they're easy to fix. Still... the ATs suck balls. Poor fuel economy and relatively fragile. If you get one, buy it in MT.

The GSR is a looker. The leather is nice and the INVECS was the first manumatic transmission on the local market in this segment. But it's a bit dull to drive in AT, and the later models weren't even available with a manual. Still... stable car, decent ride. Issues to look for are IACV and MAF issues. The AT has a rep for being expensive to repair or replace, but this means, obviously, that you buy a car that has an AT in good condition... or you buy an older GSR with a manual tranny. (but the older GSR wasn't as loaded as the 00)

Actually... any EFI car in your price range will be looking at MAF issues or idle issues at this point. Set aside money in your budget to replace sensors or vacuum parts.

While that may seem like a good reason to get the XE... as a carb won't have those issues, if it's far gone, you'll have to have it rebuilt or replaced, anyway. And as many carbureted car owners and ex-owners can tell you (I'm one), a 1.3 liter carbureted engine isn't going to be much more fuel efficient than an EFI 1.6. Sometimes, it'll be worse. I don't miss sticking my head under the hood of my old 1.3 to choke the carb every month...

I love the Civic VTi. Drives nicely, rides nicely and has a good engine. Much sportier, actually, than the two door GSR. Good luck finding one without roof rust that hasn't been riced (modified badly) to hell. Civic EG hatches are in your price range, and are fantastic little cars to drive... and the rear hatch space is pretty useful, thanks to the fold flat rear seats... but IMHO, they're waaaaay over-priced. And still prone to rust. Haggle down.

The pre-Exalta Sentras are also pretty nice, too... but they're getting old and it's hard to find one in good condition. Exaltas are posh, fully-loaded and feature-packed. But the interiors wear quickly (soft leather... lightweight plastics), so it'll be a bit of a hunt for a cherry one... and many of us in the Nissan camp are of the opinion that build quality took a step down in this generation... as these cars are assembled in Taiwan with Taiwan-made electronics. I used to drive one. I miss it. I don't miss the electronics problems and niggles.

Whatever you buy... make sure you get a car in the best condition possible... to ensure that you don't have to put out money for repairs just months after you purchase it. Or: buy a car that's way under your budget cap, and use the rest of the money for preventive maintenance up-front.

Thanks, nadrive mo na ata halos lahat ng asa pinagpipilian ko. hehe. ^ will keep this in mind. Lynx Ghias are still very much expensive, and early model Lynx probably aren't as good the latest models.

Though Corollas doesn't make enough power, I'm not into speed anyway. I just want a good commuter car. But honestly, I'd like to have a Civic VTi or VTEC, but its way beyond my budget range and not to mention the price of the parts (OEMs or Replacement parts) are expensive as well.

I also like the EG because its a hatch, its cool, and it used to be the talk of the town, but I agree with you. Its already pretty old but still good. Only problem is you have to shell out a few more moolahs to have it look like new. And of course, the EG is a good project car.

Used A/Ts are out, sabi ni erpats mas mahirap kasi imaintain o ipagawa ang sasakyang Matic. Since used na ang isang ride, di pa entirely evident ang mga problems pero baka in a month or a few months lumabas din sakit.

The GSR is definitely a looker, primarily because of it being a coupe. Isn't the 97~98mdl GSR the same as the Lancer Pizza model? Anyway, I'm taking the GSR out of my list of selections. Because: 1. Although coupes are appealing to a younger me, I hate to always have to adjust a seat just so passengers can enter and leave the car. I hate inconveniences. Hehe. I know the experience, as we used to have a 2Dr Pajero (subic) before. Thanks for bringing the MX and GLS to my attention. We just currently bought a LancerGLS1.6CVT last june, however that belongs to my dad. I now drive a Toyota FXplorer, which I intend to leave behind here in the Prov., so that they can use it as an All arounder once me and my bro go to MLA for work.
