An officemate of mine is having a hard time deciding between the two.
If you're in his shoes, which would you choose?

Honda city 1.5 cvt or Toyota Corolla 1.6E

According to him, the price difference between the two is only about 9k.

The Honda Civic would have been considered but according to the dealer, there are no more stocks available and they are awaiting for the release of the 2006 model.

Btw, he travels sometimes to the province once or twice a month.

    thanks in advance.

From the 2 cars, I would go with the City.

The corolla looks old already. Di ba police ngayon ang corolla Altis. Taxi, shuttle service etc....

    Honda
    City 1.5 CVT - Php 721,000

    Toyota
    Corolla 1.6E MT- Php 765,000
    AT- Php 800,000

    Vios 1.5G AT- Php 708,000

    * * *

Are you sure its the Corolla? Bec. the price diff bet it and the City is a lot more than the Php 9K you suggested.

I'll still get the City anytime over any other cars in its class, except the Jazz (if they release the updated version in the 2nd half of this year).

    Number001:
Altis 1.6E kasi may 35k discount (40k nga nung december eh.)
Bigger talaga si Altis pero City ay may ULT seats as in flat. Kinda interesting.
Baka kasi sa pagdrive to and from the province once a week na loaded ka ay mag-matter yun in the long run.

Aside from 1.6 vs 1.5 sila. Mas matipid ba talaga yung CVT kaysa M/T? Ilan yung km/L ng CVT? At ano rin ba yung sa Altis M/T?

Kung ganyan, actually... I'll play the devil's advocate. Corolla 1.6. It's got more elbow room than the City. The City has comparable head and legroom, but elbow room is non-existent... while you can seat three across in the Corolla.

The Corolla is better damped for long distance drives, and can still return 14+++ km/l if driven conservatively on the highway, and over 16 km/l if you've got a good right foot.

But if you plan provincial trips, the Corolla is a much more comfortable car. Of course, my relatives take their Honda City(ies?) out to the province and they enjoy themselves immensely, so it's not a bad province car either.

It's all up to your friend.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Depends if he is a bachelor or has a family already...

Though personally, I'd still get the bigger car. I'm not too fond of the City's handling dynamics (feels too neutral).

    feature wise - city
    fuel consumption - city

the lowest variant corolla ascent(sub-compact, size almost the same as vios) here in au has 1.8l engine (14+km/liter)...

for me corolla talaga, mas practical in the sense that it's bigger so it has more space and bigger seats which is important for a family man like myself, and it's safer too due to its bigger size. imagine mo pag nabangga, mas ok ang bigger car than a smaller one, lalo na papunta probinsya

yan din dilema ko before, honda city or corolla and we chose the more expensive 1.8E corolla and I'm really happy with my decision.... but it still depends on your budget but i'd go for the 1.6 corolla anytime

sa may family mas important ang comfortable, spacious and safe kahit may taxi, police kapareho

    Corolla.

I'll never understand the "it's being used as a taxi" response when going against choosing a particular car. In other countries, midsize sedans like the Camry, Sonata, heck even the Benz, are being used as taxis. Worrying about compact sedans like the Corolla and subcompacts like the Vios being used as taxis is just lame.

It's a negative perception that also has a practical slant. If your car is widely used as a taxi, it may cause problems when you're selling. But then again, since when has anyone had problems selling a secondhand Corolla?

*ozcity: The 1.6 gets pretty good gas consumption, all things considered. Definitely nowhere close to the City, but it's good.

*yaj: I just remembered, the Honda City has more cargo space than the Corolla. It's got a 500 liter trunk vs. the Corolla's 400 or so liter trunk. For comparison, the Camry's trunk is around 480 or so liters. That's also a practical consideration. Yun nga lang, the extra seating room in the back of the Corolla may make up for this deficit.

Get the Corolla, trust me. That's coming from a City owner.

As for CVT it's great but if you're concerned about durability you might want to stay away from it because the durability is unknown.

get the corolla. i feel that paying more than 750K for a subcompact city is too expensive already.

Yup, I own an altis and my cousin has a city. mas magkadikit mga shoulders nyo sa front, sa back din noticable. especially on long drives or if full capacity ang passengers that will ride the car, you'll wish you had a bigger space like the corolla altis
