Hi guys and girls, ask lang ako sa mga inputs nyo...
we are going to migrate to canada in a few months and we would need a car there...
nasanay ako sa cars dito and would like your input on which car to buy...

we are a family of 5 with 2 year old twins (car seat is a must)...
given na gusto talaga bnew but i'm open to second hand...

i own a jazz and opel (kaya medyo sanay sa maintenance neto) but given the driving conditions there i'm thinking on the side of getting a cuv (crv size) para kampante si komander pag sya mag drive...

    thanks for your inputs...

Subaru AWD would be one of you best option specially for the snow. You'll be glad you did

MAKE the decision once you get there. The choices would be endless and it will depend on your finances as a new immigrant.

Since you are a family of 5 plus 2 kids...I suggest buying a minivan instead of a sedan or SUV. It offers more space particularly legroom plus more storage at the back. Minivans nowadays drive and handle pretty much like sedans and your wife would benefit from a higher driver's vantage point.

An AWD vehicle is a key consideration for areas with snow. For a family of 5, a CUV (Forester, Rogue, CRV, etc) will do or maybe a midsize SUV (4Runner, Pathfinder, Pilot, Explorer). I have lived in snowy areas before (Midwest and Northeast US) and AWD is a blessing but it will not be of help if you run into black ice or powder dry snow (lost traction).

    Definitely agree with this

Congratulations on the migration TS. Share ko lang.. a cousin of mine (family of 4) migrated last year and bought the Nissan Xtrail when it was released there. I mentioned this only because he had this on his sights way before it was even released here. Frankly I find it cuv small for a family of 5.

    Goodluck on your choice.

When I see the deals offered for the Dodge Caravan in Canada, it makes me think that they are giving it away. Sobrang mura.

Check 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan Canda Value Package - Review Features. Less than 20K, Canadian dollars so parang P700K lang!

When I went to the US for a long work assignment, one of the key considerations was getting a vehicle. I had limited options as I did not have a solid credit history even though having been to the US a couple of times before. I went out looking for vehicles that fit my limited budget. A lease is out of budget. Resale value of midsize and compacts are a bit high. Newer CUV's are also a bit high. FWD is a good all-year vehicle as some studies suggest that FWD does better in snowy conditions compared to RWD but AWD is better. In months with heavy snowfall, a vehicle with high ground clearance is advisable. So, I found myself a used Ford Expedition. Resale value is dirt cheap due to its high fuel consumption but it has AWD, high ground clearance, can easily seat a number of people (though not my concern that time), and I had the extra space to carry big stuff to fill the apartment we got (no need to rent U-Haul trucks). That 4.6L V8 truck (my daughter calls it the "big black bear") served me well for 2 years in Illinois. I had the confidence to ride out a foot of snowfall if the need arises. It even came handy when I helped out my Filipino teammates carry house stuff when they had to join a few months later. Parking is a challenge though in tight spots when I go to downtown Chicago. I had to live with its high FC but it is a small price to pay for all its purpose. I understood then why most common Americans have a big pickup truck or a mammoth SUV as it was primarily used as a family hauler or something to tow big things or buy equipment or load up for a month's worth of grocery.

Did I mention that it is one tough truck? I once experienced a slide, losing all traction, on dry powdery snow and the truck went out to the ditch beside the road. The truck just bobbed along, automatically engaged its 4x4 (my usual setting is AWD), went thru all the mud in the ditch, and we got back safely on the road. That taught me not to try drive again in dry powdery snow.
