What's the main reason kung bakit mababa ang resale value ng American makes dito sa Pinas? Are they really that expensive to service/maintain? Or is it just the perception here na basta Korean at American brands mababa dapat ang bentahan?

Kasi I'm thinking about getting a used Ford soon.....

    TIA!

Because this is what most people think:
Its hard to service American makes here because most American vehicles are CBU so parts are limited(have to be ordered/imported) and expensive...
Japanese/Korean brands = cheaper parts available almost everywhere... including fakes...
Of course it may be a bit exaggerated...
Local after sales service of Ford, GM and Chrysler(now under CATS) have improved through the years...

many factors dictate resale value like:

    1. durability - includes service and parts availability
    2. practicality - like seating capacity , fuel consumption, difficulty of parking etc.

american cars lalo na the suv/ pickup type usually mahal i-maintain (daily gas and parts ) and sometimes sinusumpong ng mga quirks kaya mababa resale..also dahil malaki displacement mahal din lto registration kaya sometimes kapag kapos ka sa budget it would be a pain to own..

    just to compare:

    in-dash/interiors of Patrol - parang pick-up lang
in-dash/interiors of 3rd Gen Patrol - still uses the old thin single in-dash stereo

in-dash/interiors of Explorer/Exped - para ka nasa cabin ng airplane with all the luxurious electronic gizmos and stuff.

but people still prefer the japanese ones, well I guess, perception nga. not personal, but public perception.

but I think one major factor why, bec. of public utility vehicles. people feel safer and tougher with jap cars when up against these road monsters everyday.

get them out of the equation, like for example a long stress-free drive to the province or a holy week vacation in the city, i'm sure people will prefer to ride or to drive with American cars. American cars are designed for developed worlds - the world without dumb jaywalkers, pesky tricycles and king-of-the-road PUVs. luxury, comfort and convenience from point A to point B are of primary concern. while jap cars are for durability with sacrificing some convenience/comfort to withstand the "elements" -> of which the Philippines is so rich of. hehehe

By the way, in other countries the Patrol was facelifted for 2005, this is the new interior.

True, Perception and the first impressions of American SUVs when they were still rare and had limited dealerships/service centers in the 90's...

After the Expedition became much more expensive and the fuel prices went up, the latest popular American SUV is the Trailblazer EXT, more fuel efficient, narrower but can still seat 7-8 passengers...

A lot of SUV buyers also prefer diesel engines. American SUVs don't have diesel versions.

It's a perception of (admittedly) poor quality during the 70's and 80's that snowballed into an all-out anti-American bias.

By and large, American cars aren't bad cars, but compare the interior quality of most 90's American compacts with that of the Corolla or Civic, and there's a world of difference there.

Of course, many Japanese SUVs have simple interiors, but that keeps the price low, and the examples cited aim at a different market. If we compare apples to apples (luxury Japanese SUVs with luxury US SUVs), Japanese makes have better fitted interiors, too.

Locally, initial imports of US cars met with problems regarding heat (US spec Expeditions suffered horribly here) and parts availability. While these problems have been mitigated to some extent, parts availability is still an issue for both Ford and GM.

Nowadays, US cars are catching up. Although none of them can claim to be as reliable as a Corolla (whose reliability is, at least to my mind, vastly over-rated), they're just as good or better than Nissans or Mitsubishis, better than some Koreans (who are catching up with the rest very quickly), and definitely more reliable than many Europeans.

I'm talking about Fords, Mazdas (yes, it's a Japanese nameplate, but there's a lot of American engineering there), Volvos, Chryslers, Dodge, etcetera. I'm still not seeing a wealth of quality from local GM products (Opel, Chevrolet (Daewoo)) but there's still room for development.

A case in point is the Mazda 3 / Focus. The Mazda 3 has proven reliable (recommended by Consumer Reports) and has been compared favorably to both the current and upcoming Civic. The Focus competes very well with the Golf in Europe, and is unmatched in noise and road insulation... now if only Ford/Mazda would bring in the manual versions so people would stop complaining about the mileage and power... (the 1.6 manual actually gets terrific mileage for the weight of the car).

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

correction with my post above, 3rd gen Pajero (not Patrol) yun gumagamit pa din ng single in dash thin stereo.

sobrang bare. sobra gusto-gusto ko pa naman magkarun ng Pajero 3rd Gen. with ford expeds/explo, yun steering wheel dami na gizmos like temp control, volume control, AM/FM control, cruise control (well exclusive naman siguro ito sa Ford)

American brands -- Bakit ang baba ng resale?
