Hi, Sirs! Me and my husband are looking to replace our 2006 Innova. We want to get a brand new car and with our limited budget (750K max), we're thinking a subcompact is our best option. It's going to be our family car so primary consideration ang safety, durability, FC and low maintenance cost.

In terms of looks, I'm open to anything. Of course, my husband would prefer something na medyo maporma lol but, for me, I just want the best value we can get for our budget.

Another consideration is the size because medyo malalaking tao kami, so plus points for roominess. A more important requirement is the storage capacity because we live in QC but we spend every weekend in Pasay at my parents' house so we're usually hauling our stuff around (clothes, our kid's toys, etc.). That's why I'm thinking hindi pwede samin ang hatchbacks. Am I right po? Yung daily weekday route naman namin is limited to Diliman/Scout area lang.

Hindi po kami masyadong maalam sa cars so we've been researching online and going over forums for a few weeks now. It's really helped us a lot (esp. the good people of tsikot.com) but it's also given us a lot more to consider. If you could please share your thoughts on the following cars and how they compare, it would really help us and we'd greatly appreciate it.

    Hyundai Accent 1.4 MT - 588K
    Hyundai Accent 1.4 AT - 688K
Ford Fiesta Trend 1.4 MT (Sedan) - 685K
Chevy Aveo LT 1.4 MT (Sedan) - 679K
Chevy Aveo LT 1.4 AT (Sedan) - 719K
    Honda City 1.3S MT - 731K
    Mazda 2 V 1.5 MT - 725K
    Mazda 2 S 1.3 MT - 685K

Very tempting yung base model ng Hyundai Accent at 588K but my concern is the lack of safety features. In your opinion, Sirs, how big of a deal is the lack of ABS/Airbag po?

I'm also open to other suggestions. Sorry po sa haba ng post ko. Medyo excited kasi and looking forward to hearing your thoughts. More power to tsikot.com and all its members!

If I would suggest, don't sell your Innova and add the Fiesta 1.4 (not the base) on the garage

at least a compact car like Cruze?

We're considering City for the resale value pero natigilan din ako dun sa news ng recall and thinking of yung nangyari din sa Japan ngayon, I don't know how that would affect Japanese car companies.

Other than that, sobrang okay naman siya at laki na rin ng pakinabang namin dun since we got it in 2006. First family car namin yun kaya medyo sad din to let it go pero naisip namin nagsisimula na siyang sumpungin.

I guess it will be all up to the test drive. We will check out the Fiesta, Accent, and City. Thank u po!

Good luck, sis.

(Good thing nobody suggested the Aveo, old-gen na kasi.)

    Hyundai Accent 1.4 MT - 588K
    Hyundai Accent 1.4 AT - 688K

    - Don't know much about durability and maintenance costs, but in terms of space and comfort, this is a good contender. Lack of Airbags not a big deal. Airbags only limit injuries in accidents over a narrow range of speeds. In very high speed or low speed accidents, airbags don't add anything to protection. If you drive on treacherous roads or in treacherous conditions, the lack of ABS might be an issue... but as long as you maintain your tires in good condition, you should have no problems, not on a common FWD sedan in city traffic.

    - Oh, looks awesome, to boot.

Ford Fiesta Trend 1.4 MT (Sedan) - 685K

Good space/cargo space in both sedan and hatch form, though the Jazz/City still beats it in terms of cargo space. Build quality is good, and the driving is excellent, though interior materials aren't quite as nice as in the City, Accent or Mazda2. Shifter a bit ropy compared to the City.

Noise isolation and ride comfort for the Trend are best-in-class, as are driving dynamics. Safety features are great, too. Sound system is very good, even on the base 1.4. Better than the tinny sound and muddy bass in some of the other cars here.

Maintenance is claimed to be cheaper than Honda's, and the Fiesta shares the same 10,000 kilometer service interval, which makes it very convenient to own.

Chevy Aveo LT 1.4 MT (Sedan) - 679K
Chevy Aveo LT 1.4 AT (Sedan) - 719K

Kind of old. Coarse and unrefined engines, lacking in both power and economy. Body shell has never tested well in terms of crash testing in Europe.

Interesting in the amount of kit for the price, and the interior is decent, but that's about it.

    Honda City 1.3S MT - 731K

Still the car to beat. Big interior, huge 500 liter trunk, good driving dynamics and good build quality. 10,000 kilometer service intervals mean you'll spend less time and commuting money going to the dealership for oil changes.

Expensive, though. Expensive but worth it.

    Mazda 2 V 1.5 MT - 725K

Interior quality is better than the Fiesta, but it's lacking, features-wise compared to other 1.5s. Fuel economy is very similar to Toyota's (which means it's good) and the rear seat is about as big as the Vios (a bit smaller than the Fiesta/City) while the trunk is almost as big as the Fiesta's.

Road noise isolation is halfway between Honda City and Ford Fiesta, but you're more aware of your speed in this car... it feels light and raw.

The most exciting car to drive in the class. Lacks low-down punch compared to the Vios 1.5 and lacks top-end "oomph" compared to the City/Jazz 1.5, but it drives like a Miata with four doors.

Which probably means it's not the car for you.

    Mazda 2 S 1.3 MT - 685K

Even more fun to drive, despite the lack of power. Doesn't lack much in terms of features compared to the 1.5. Very frugal, cheap to gas up... similar to Toyota 1.3s and the old Honda Jazz 1.3. Engine is weak, but it doesn't feel that way in traffic. This is a very light car, so it doesn't take much prodding of the gas pedal to get going.

Very cute and charming... like the old Toyota Echo. Unfortunately, like the Toyota Yaris, the trunk is very small. It's bigger than in the Toyota, but nowhere near as good as the Fiesta or Jazz. I'd buy it as a personal commuter, but for a family car, it might not be suitable.

    -----

    Other cars to consider:

Ford Fiesta Trend 1.6 PS A/T

The 1.6 AT may not quite be as economical as the 1.5 ATs of competitors, but the convenience and smoothness is commendable.

    Honda Jazz

Still the most practical hatchback you can buy. Not as economical as the old Jazz was, but the 1.3 MT version is sure to fit the bill. The amount of cargo space and cargo flexibility (you can carry a ref inside... ) are still completely unbeatable.

    Toyota Yaris 1.5

I don't like the Vios. The interior materials are worse than even the Fiesta's, the trunk is small and the design feels very dated. The Yaris, however, has personality. And it's cheap to run. Seats are soft and comfortable, ride comfort is decent and discounts are big because they don't sell as well as the Jazz and Fiesta.

Trunk is smaller than even the Mazda2 hatch, though.

    Thanks for this review.

I am all set to buy a new Accent.. then I saw a Chevrolet exhibit medyo napa 2nd thought tuloy ako...

You are right that the Aveo had a big kit for its price and the interior is nice. Thats what attracted me to it (i find the interior more important than the exterior.. since my point is its the inside that I, the driver and my passengers see 90% of the time when driving, and i dont mind so much which is more "pogi" outside.

I loved the interior of the Aveo.. liked its aircon vents, drink tray, HUD , drivers armrest, roomy interior, and audio controls w bluetooth. Plus it has DUAL airbags vs Accent's driver side only.

Price.. the 1.4 AT at 719k.. may discount pa yan less 20k (or more i think if u really haggle) PLUS they have an ongoing promo FREE iPAD w/c effectively brings down the price at LESS THAN 680k (if you sell or consider the price of the iPad) ... comparable to the new Accent 2011 AT price of 688k...

With its kits and features, I would almost compare it to the Accent Blue w/c is 808k , the only difference is the engine of Accent Blue w/c is 1.6...

Sold na ako sana sa Aveo.. I know Accent is newer and ***ier, but as I said, looks on the inside dont matter much to me..

Then I looked at other issues like FC, maintenance, parts, service, etc and doon na nagkatalo...

you just added more negatives with your review of its crash testing performance..

I almost wish someone would stick up for Aveo and talk about its virtues as i really would like a reason to go and buyit over the Accent (really like that interior and its kits...hehe) Maybe if they give 50k or more discount.,hehe

So i guess is really the new accent for me now... :-)

The main problem with Chevy is lack of parts and after sales support. They price their parts like gold and its hard to find parts outside of the dealer.
Chevy resale value is very low. Unless the new owners of Chevy have improved this, I will advise you to get something else.

The Honda City is a good car. Common, expensive but it is worth it.

Jazz a even better choice. I like the recent facelift.

Accent, Mazda 2 and Fiesta, no experience with them. Have not even seen what they look like inside so no comment.

Even shocking, the Aveo had a poor reliability in Consumer Reports' survey. Oh no

Fiesta, Accent, Aveo, City, Mazda2, etc. - your thoughts please?
