I'll be torn between Mazda 3 HB cause of the Skyactiv technology and the looks of course and Ford Focus' porma looks as well. Hehe!

    They'll all drive differently.

Give those four to me and I'll easily get the Mazda3. No questions asked.

Depends on your priorities. Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla are the top choices here. Mazda 3 for the fun and excitement, Toyota Corolla if after a safe choice. Ford Focus is well, a Ford, Fix or Repair Daily. Elantra is ... meh.

Currently driving a Focus 2.0HB, got it last 2013. But during that time, if the 3 was already out,
I would have picked the 3.

    By rank:
    1.) Mazda 3
+ Looks, Handling & good performance, Nice Interior, efficient
    - Not really spacious

    2.) Ford Focus
+ Looks, Handling, banging engine, nice interior, lots of toys
    - A bit cramped, Dual Clutch Transmission

    3.) Altis 2.0V
+Looks good, LED lighting (really like this), Toyota reliability, good space
    - Interior isn't as nice as the HBs, ugly audio system
Not really negative but I personally prefer HB>sedan
Sister has the previous gen 2.0V which has the same? 2.0 dual vvt-i engine and CVT, pulls well and CVT is quite good

Not really a fan of the Elantra

Mazda3 or Ford Focus...any thoughts on including the Civic 2.0 and Impreza on the options list?

Mazda 3 2.0 for me. The awards they're getting this year tells you alot about it.

I did not include the Civic 2.0 kasi parang, sorry to Civic FB owners, pero di ko talaga gusto, unlike sa FD na nagustuhan ko siya. Impreza naman, if hindi lang din WRX or WRX STi, eh nope. Plus ang entry level Impreza kasi eh parang bland for me.

So far kasi, I'm on the market looking for a new car, and I decided na it will be a compact. Kung hindi lang kasi nasira ang JDM Pajero ko, plus it's already has a life of 20 years na, kaya due for replacement na rin. Di ko naman ibebenta JDM ko, kaya compact ang napagdesisyunan ko.

I'll try the Mazda 3. Nagpa-book na ko ng test drive on Tuesday. Yun nga lang, 1.5 lang yun meron silang test unit at walang 2.0

I'm having fun with my 1.5. Can imagine how much more fun it will be to drive the 2.0

How about a VW para diesel pa rin?

Mazda 3. It just blows the competition out of the water.

First and foremost, it drives wonderfully. Very grippy with responsive steering. In comparison, the Altis has feather-light steering with barely any feedback.

Power is also abundant, nicely paired with a quick-shifting AT. It's something fun to drive both on open highways and twisty roads.

Interior looks very upscale and wouldn't look out of place in a German luxury compact. The exterior speaks for itself, I don't think anyone will disagree that it's a head-turner.

Features are also abundant, with everything from push button ignition to a fancy moon roof.

Only downside is the cramped backseat, but if it's space that you need, just get a Montero.

The Mazda3 wouldn't be in the Car&Driver 10Best if not for its overall value and performance. The only other compact with at least 4 doors in the 10Best is the VW Golf.
