Hey guys. My son turns 17 on Feb 2023 and I would like him to start to learn to drive with a manual tranny. I am looking for a cheap but reliable mid 90s and up MT car that he can bang around with a light steering (power steering is preferable), fuel efficient, slow enough to keep him out of trouble, simple to fix, super cheap parts, available parts in most auto supplies, has very very good aircon, and is very reliable. My war car budget is P40k-P50k. P60k including repairs. Must be able to take punishment.

I am open to anything. Please let me know your recommendations and why.

    Happy holidays and cheers!

Mind says Wigo. Toyota practicality yada yada

Heart says S-presso Tall and small and relatively rare.

Didn't see the mid-90s Can't go wrong with a big body Corolla or Lancer pizza (not the itlog EFI engines as they have this problem with the idle control valve). Added bonus is it will teach him to fix whatever WILL go wrong while he's driving those.

+1 Big body corolla. I still see quite a few on the road today. I sold my big body in 2014 and the buyer said it's still running today!

that's not a very workable budget...

corolla gli or sentra eccs. EFIs are usually less troublesome down the road than carburatoreds.
but cars that old... expect to do some serious fixing.

if you go up to 200K, there's the early altises and 2000s sentras.

I was also a college student before.

And I chose an early 80's box type over the E90 Corolla as my first car (we were using E90's for our taxi business so I find it annoying na "pang taxi" magiging car ko)

Big mistake... the 15 year old box type had too many problems. plus the fact that it was not as modern, comfortable and quick as my classmate's cars.

My dad later replaced it with an early 90's Lancer - still not as good as our E90s

My last college car from my Dad was an E100 (which was funny since I think its the next most used taxi car, second to the Gemini) - I used the E100 until I was working and eventually bought my own car.

IMO, buy the most expensive/reliable/economical car you can afford as he will also be able to use it longer.

by coincidence, a car dealer is selling an 80s box lancer, for 400++K!

i like taxi models. it means maintenance is easy, what with plentiful and affordable parts and knowledgeable mechanics.

i agree. buy the most expensive car you are willing to afford. it usually translates to better service down the road.

some folks recommend a new car or something reliable enough.
that way, the newbie driver can concentrate more on the driving part and less on the car issues part.

swerte mo if its sa EDSA. can you imagine the car breaking down sa Tagaytay or Antipolo.

My 90's Lancer's transmission broke down while I was going uphill to Baguio. Imagine the cost of having the car towed back to Manila.

    in truth,
it does not bother me in the least.
"my car is a tool, not a status symbol."
i am probably one of those who do not care what others say of my daily driver.

in more than once, i have been tempted to let them open the door , let them in, and "charge accordingly".
    sayang the opportunity.

    heh heh.

yes. start him off in a MT.
he can learn AT easily and instinctively enough, later.

i have yet to see a driver start out on AT, and later learn MT.

I personally think learning MT is no longer required.

But I booked a MT car sa A1 for my daughter since its cheaper

For me, ok din naman mag start sa AT, because the most important thing is to learn to maneuver the car. Once confident na sa regular traffic, madali na pag aralan ang MT.

Agree. Pero those that started with MT can drive ATs. I'm shocked nga there are a lot of people na pala who don't know how to drive manual [emoji15]
