MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 2) After three oil companies announced a P2 per liter cutback starting Friday, independent oil player UniOil said it would roll back its own prices to P3 per liter effective 10 p.m. Thursday.
UniOil general manager Luisito Medina gave the announcement late Thursday morning after major oil players Pilipinas Shell and Petron announced a P2 per liter cutback on gasoline, diesel, and kerosene prices effective 12:01 a.m. Friday.
But Medina said the P3 per liter rollback would only be for gasoline while diesel and kersone would have a P2 per liter reduction.
Shortly after noon Thursday, Chevron Philippines announced a P2 per liter cutback on gasoline, diesel, and kerosene prices, said Toby Ebrida, Chevron communications manager.
In a phone interview, Bobby Kanapi, Shell vice president for communications, said the P2 per liter rollback would be applied to gasoline, diesel, and kerosene prices.
The cutback will be on the same oil products for Petron, said its spokesperson Virginia Ruivivar.
Shell was the first to announce an oil price rollback this week, followed by Petron.
Independent oil player SeaOil Philippines, through its president Francis Glenn Yu, announced a P2 per liter cutback for the same oil products.
The top three oil companies -- Shell, Petron, and Chevron -- got the flack from the government and motorists for their late implementation of an oil price rollback last week when small oil players had cut theirs early in the same period.
But Kanapi said they were only "doing what we're doing" and added that the criticisms would not affect their sales.
Meanwhile, Kanapi said they could not implement a one-time rollback even as world crude prices dropped to less than $100 on Wednesday.
"We cannot speculate and we will continue to assess on a weekly basis," he said.
Since August, gasoline prices have gone down seven times for a total of P8.50 a liter, while diesel and kerosene prices have been reduced six times for a total of P6.50 a liter.
