How do carwash stations determine which cars/vehicles are S,M,L,or XL?

Small - 2 doors / hatch / tricycles

Medium - Sedans
Large - Vans / SUV's
Extra Large ? - Trucks 6 wheelers and up

This is as far as I know.

Well, you'll have to ask them what their standard is but the international standard for vehicle sizing is listed here:
