Fellow Tsikoteers,

I want to restore my 82 Corolla DX. Pls. advice where I can have it restored and painted na pulido ang gawa and reasonable price. Preferably in QC. I have been contemplating on Mega Motion Works, Wet Look and Car Savers..

My DX is still in good running condition but needs body restoration works plus mechanical inspection and conditioning as well.

sa carsavers may exprience na ako dyan. so, so lang ang gawa. nothing spectacular.

sa wetlook, nakapagtanung na ako. nabisita ko na rin shop nila. price is reasonable P3,000 per panel ang charge. maganda yung mga resulta naman ng mga rides don na ginagawa nila.

sa hotwheels na nirefer ko, reasonable ang price at malufet talaga ang latag ng paint. look for pat lim. sa grupo toyota may mga sample sya ng mga trabaho nya. nakakapagalway

sir depends on what your goals are

if you are planning to turn your car into something that wins car show awards, you're better off with either of the ff. shops (no particular order)

1.) Alex car Restoration - Roosevelt Ave., QC.
2.) Alfred Motor Works - Kamuning QC (langit ang presyo dito pero OK gumawa)
3.) Erwin Estacio Autoworks - Japanese old school ang specialty

Average 100k ang ginagastos sa pagrestore ng old school, which may or may not include changing the engine, at depende rin sa approach.

Tsaka ang diskarte sa pag restore ng old school is as much as possible replace those rusted parts with new ones. Since DX naman iyan marami pang hood at fender iyan, brand new pa (try calling Toyocars/Toyorama/NGK in Banawe, and Celica in Araneta). Mga pinto/other body parts at salamin naman marami kay Saulo niyan (Congressional).

Mga ilaw niyan marami pa rin kaya don't worry. Except na lang kung naka US Version ka na mukha.

Ang mahirap hanapin diyan is interior parts, especially the little ones.

iyong friend ko nakabili ng Corona wagon (RT 130, dapat sa akin ito pero nawalan ako ng budget huhuhu) then he had it repainted/latero along Kamias Rd in QC (bago mag Kalayaan intersection, right side coming from EDSA, puro old school specialty nila). I haven't seen his car yet, pero tapos na daw. Will provide the shop name (I forgot na kasi) and personal rating once I get to see his car.

Much better if you could post pics of your car in its current state.

Bottom line ang nagdadala sa old school ay the ff:

1.) kaha - unat, di tabingi, nice paint
2.) mags - TRD TOSCO, TOMS, Compo, Enkei or what have you
3.) interior - it's either all orig at walang crack na upuan, dashboard at ceiling or go tuner setup (naka nardi/momo na manibela at shift knob, aftermarket pedals, at siyempre Recaro N-joy na net-type headrest).

thank you very much sa advices mo that was very informative. actually ang plan ko for the restoration work is as follows:

a) achieve a good body repair and wet look paint finish (i read in some threads about the 2k paint maganda raw ito if properly done). since ako ang first owner ng car, ang madalas na nakikita ko na kalawang is sa lower portions ng mga pinto and trunk floor. other areas are still okay.

b) no engine modification is required gusto ko stock pa rin siya. most probably reconditioning lang ang dapat gawin sa engine to make it run like brand new. once pa lang na-overhaul ang engine. transmission, suspension systems, fuel & brake system may have to be checked & repaired as required.

c) sa interior naman gusto ko lang restore lahat ang seats, upholstery, sidings, dashboard, carpeting, door and window trims, and major cleaning.

d) if i still have some budget i would go for a decent sound setup, mags & steering wheel

would appreciate if you can give me shop name/address in kamias road kung saan nagpagawa ang friend mo and your assessment.

nadelay ang paglabas ng oto ng friend ko. 1-2 weeks pa ata from now.

anyway based dun sa mga ibang otong nagawa niya, i can say that 6.5-8/10 ang overall assessment ko. why?

1.) ang pagbuo ng old school di dapat minamadali. sa case ng oto ng friend ko, nagsabay ang pintor at latero. This may be OK to most of the panels, iyong mga di nalatero, pero para dun sa mga nalatero kelangan "pahinugin" din iyong bagong kaha na nakalagay sa luma at may mabubuntis (uumbok) dun. Pagka minadali ang stage na ito kakapal lang ang masilya ng oto mo kakahabol sa mali.

a) achieve a good body repair and wet look paint finish (i read in some threads about the 2k paint maganda raw ito if properly done). since ako ang first owner ng car, ang madalas na nakikita ko na kalawang is sa lower portions ng mga pinto and trunk floor. other areas are still okay.

wow first owner pala kayo sir. Do it right the first time, I strongly suggest, lalo na if you have the budget. replace the rusted panels with new ones, and hanap kayo ng magaling na latero.

Much better na rin kung strip to metal na ang tirada sa oto nyo para mas tumagal pa ang buhay. Actually any paint combination (kahit acrylic) will do, but it's not just basta-basta na pagtugma ng pondo/kulay at topcoat. In our brief experience:

1.) magandang epoxy primer is either anzahl or nippon
2.) magandang masilya is glasurit pa rin (!!!)
3.) sa kulay, dito ka puwede magtipid ng konti:
a.) kung may budget, puwede mag nippon or anzahl
b.) kung kulang sa budget, kahit mcgills or weber acrylic puwede na

4.) sa topcoat naman, only anzahl or weber topcoat

b) no engine modification is required gusto ko stock pa rin siya. most probably reconditioning lang ang dapat gawin sa engine to make it run like brand new. once pa lang na-overhaul ang engine. transmission, suspension systems, fuel & brake system may have to be checked & repaired as required.

4k pa ba stock engine sir? if yes:

1.) replace timing chain assembly
2.) tappets
3.) palit na rin brake discs/drums, clutch cable
4.) check na rin jettings ng carb

c) sa interior naman gusto ko lang restore lahat ang seats, upholstery, sidings, dashboard, carpeting, door and window trims, and major cleaning.

sir kung buo pa ang interior i suggest you leave it as it is. kung hindi, seatmate in antipolo can restore the interior. iyon nga lang medyo madugo.

d) if i still have some budget i would go for a decent sound setup, mags & steering wheel

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was just wondering why you know so much about restoration work. Do you own a shop or you have gone through many restoration work with your own cars?

By the way, ano ba exact address ng Saulo where I can buy the panels and doors you mentioned? I will try to canvass the prices and check the quality of their doors and panels.

i don't have a shop but i would love to own one. but i don't have the time. siguro masaya na ako sa pagbibigay ng advice. hehehe.

I have owned 2 old school cars already (one toyota and one mitsu). it's unfortunate that both of them had to go because of other priorities.

i am sharing almost everything i know (mostly from experience, others from hanging out with fellow old schoolers) kasi ayoko na maulit sa iba iyong nangyari sa akin.

About saulo, coming from visayas ave/quezon circle, just turn left at congressional then turn right at the first corner. starbucks na yata iyong nandun. then straight ahead sa looban (malubak na kalsada). may isang tindahan pa dun, iyong tango, pero wag ka dun, ang mahal ng presyo dun. dun ka na kay saulo.

most of saulo's stock come from australia.

btw iyong 100k na namention ko before is for show type cars for everyday use (i.e. less body work/alignment, strip to metal and minor fixes) i think ok to budget 50-60k.

puwede rin naman paunti-unti ang gawa kung kulang sa budget, like i did before.
