Insular Technologies, a Filipino outfit based in Dumaguete, has launched its first electric vehicle.
Here's how it looks:

According to Rene M. Tuballa, founder partner of Insular Technologies, their model electric vehicle is locally assembled in Dumaguete with parts from United States and has a DC motor prime mover power by 18-6 volt golf cart Motolite batteries, and will be paraded in Dumaguete on August 27 during the Silliman University Founder’s Day at 2 p.m.
Tuballa said their product is an “ easy ride” gas engine powered vehicle commonly used around Negros Oriental for public transportation.
Insular Technologies is a startup company founded last year by four engineers and IT (Industrial Technology) professionals that are now living in the United States but were all originally from Dauin, Negros Oriental. While two of the partners have lived in Victorias City in Negros Occidental and studied in Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBI).
We are trying to position the company as a microfinance technology management company especializing on renewable energy, stressed Tuballa.
However, at this time, we do not want to discuss our business strategy but we will be happy to direct our attention to the technical aspects of the electric vehicle, he added.

September 7th, 2007 09:06 AM #4I wonder what is the vehicle's performance figures? How many kilometers per charge under no load and full load conditions? Regenerative braking? Are the battery packs consisting of standard car batteries or deep cycle batteries? I assume the battery packs are hidden under the rear bench seats.

Ang sana na lang ay they give bigger focus on marketing it - along side with their technical aspect...microsoft's bill gate focused on marketing and they become successful enough to finance the technical.

September 12th, 2007 07:18 AM #7I hope this individual e-jeepney projects from Dumaguete, the one from Quezon city( with an anfra made body), one from Greenpeace and the e-jeepney of the MVPMAP plus of course the Tsikot.com will come together and consolidate the project into one so that the viability of the project will increase with the combine resources.
Sayang kung di matuloy. They are going to vie for a small market so one unified entity is not enough. I hope I can bring them all in one event so that young people (students) will become aware of such worthy projects.
In Cavite there alot of golf courses, industrial estates and subdivisions. These e-jeepneys can used as a clean and alternative transport vehicle within the premises of such built up areas.

January 25th, 2008 11:07 PM #9It is in the original post that it uses golf cart batteries. These are deep-cycle.
With 18 batteries, I would hazard a driving range of around 50km. Those 18 batteries weigh a ton though! (actually, half a ton).
