February 11th, 2009 06:47 PM #1Mga masters, normal po ba na iinit ang tubig ng radiator after only about 3-5 minutes of idling?
Yung car ko po kasi is a 97 galant a/t, 3 minutes after i-start binuksan po ng friend ko ang radiator cap at sumirit ang tubig. sabi nya di raw dapat umiinit agad ng ganun. yung temp guage naman po ay nasa gitna.
Salamat po sa tulong...

3 minutes idling from cold morning start??? is too short. baka walang tubig/coolant yan. tama friend mo. kung early morning cold tapos ganun agad baka thermostat problem.

It could be blocked jacket cooling system. Using coolant on old engines is a disadvantage. You might want to consider a top overhaul and radiator cleaning. In 3 minutes of idling in a clean cooling system, water in radiator doesn't quickly boils, it just moves in circulation until it normally boils.

sir leinahtan, magkano po kaya ang top overhaul ng radiator? also, bakit po di advisable ang coolant?
appreciate the help.

If "nasa gitna" is normal for your car, then it's not overheating (yet).
My guess is you did not have enough coolant in the radiator.
(caution: best to make a habit of putting a rag or towel over the cap before opening....iwas paso)
Coolant? old or new car no problem. Coolant simply lowers the vapor pressure of the liquid....means lower rate of evaporation through boiling point elevation..... a phenomenon observed when a solute such as ethylene glycol is added to water.

I had my previous car (2nd hand corolla xl 92) top overhauled before for P2500 from a trusted shop. Don't know kung magkano na ngayon. Pwede ka naman magpa free estimate. Thereafter, I used wilkins distilled water in radiator as the mechanic advised me that distilled water is better than with coolant on older engines. I had no problems then until I sold it for a brand new AUV, you know lumalaki na kasi family so I need a bigger car. If you really want to put coolant into your radiator, mixed it 50/50 with distilled water. HTH.

50/50 coolant/water is always better than pure water. Coolant acts to raise the boiling point, prevent rust formation in the cooling system, and helps prevent water pump cavitation (through raising the boiling point) which can cause overheating at high engine speeds.
If your car warms up in 3 minutes, that means your thermostat is doing its job. If it takes ten minutes or more to reach mid-level on your gauge, you're exposing your engine to more stress than is necessary, running it too cold.
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

February 15th, 2009 12:17 PM #8i don't think anything is wrong with the car. if you're not overheating or not losing water then there is no need to worry about it.

I think it's just water pressure caused by the water pump. 10 years ago, I was working on a box-type Sentra. Kaka-start ko lang for a minute or two. Then I went about to open the radiator cap (afterthought to add more water kasi)... ayun, tumalsik yung radiator cap at naligo ako ng coolant.
Buti maligamgam pa lang yung tubig.
