i think everyone's taking this the wrong way
ung "typical" wasn't meant as a negative
di naman ibig sabihin boring
the guy is an economist
he's looking for the world's average place and he found it in Cebu
outliers ang sobrang yaman at sobrang hirap na lugar
di naman pwede Tokyo or NY maging representative ng typical place in the world
di naman pwede Port Au Prince (Haiti) or Monrovia (Liberia)
Cebu is right there in the middle
not so rich, not so poor
demographics also nasa global median
that's the author's point

Oo nga, I read the article and "typical" was not used negatively, but just as a descriptor of what the average city in the world is, and Cebu fits the bill. Not too rich, not too poor, not too modern, not too backward, mix of Asian, American, and European influence, mix of urban and rural.
Lumalabas na naman pagkapeenoise sa mga reaction dito.
