UP monorail project still on track
MANILA, Philippines—If all goes as planned, students of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, will soon have access to another mode of transport within the campus aside from the ubiquitous Ikot jeepneys.
The Department of Science and Technology (DoST) has announced that it will be pushing through with its plan to build a monorail on the university campus—an alternative transport system it hopes to implement in Metro Manila.
With the help of private contractor Miescor Builders Inc., construction of the locally designed monorail on a 465-meter-long elevated test track will soon start with the train expected to start operating by October or around the start of the second semester.
Called the Automated Guideway Transit System, or AGTS, the monorail will run on technology designed wholly by Filipino engineers and scientists at UP and DoST’s Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC), according to Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo.
“[It] will be the future of mass transport systems,” he said of the technology already in use in Japan, Singapore, United States and Canada.
With an elevation of 6.1 meters, the AGTS track will run from C. P. Garcia Avenue up to the UP College of Fine Arts.
The train is designed to be a “fully automated, driverless” electric transporter with two adjoining coaches that can hold 60 passengers. The coaches will run on rubber tires instead of metal wheels “to minimize track noise,” the DoST said.
The UP test track will help DoST engineers fine-tune the design of its train technology, including its speed, stability, brake distance and power, said Jonathan Puerto, an engineer who is also MIRDC’s officer-in-charge

UPDATE ON THE UP AGT PROJECT
The construction of the 500-meter elevated track of UP Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) System is now in full swing. The track will connect Jacinto Street (along the College of Fine Arts) and the CP Garcia Avenue (near the CHED Building). The AGT is a joint project of the Department of Science and Technology and the University of the Philippines. The specific offices involved in the technical aspect of the project implementation are the DOST Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC), UP Diliman National Center for Transportation Studies (NCTS), College of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering, Geodetic Engineering) and the College of Science (National Institute of Geological Sciences).

The UP Office of the Vice-President for Development shepherded the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the DOST and UP in July 2011, that paved the way to the on-going construction of 500-meter elevated track. VPD Elvira Zamora has explained that the said track is primarily for scientific research and development purposes. DOST and UP scientists, engineers and researchers still need to understand more accurately how an AGT can work efficiently, reliably and economically under Philippine conditions.
Current hypotheses on the different aspects of the AGT system require experimental validation in order to gain new scientific knowledge and invaluable technical competence that are crucial in the development of a sustainable and environmentally-friendly mass transport system not only for UP but for our cities as well.

The AGT test run will feature a number of stages like the careful testing of the structural integrity of the elevated railway, power supply reliability, automatic safety system, car reliability and safety, etc. It is a step-by-step process that is expected to start in October 2012 or even earlier. Has anybody noticed along C.P. Garcia the elevated monorail system being built within the UP Campus? I think this is the best infrastructure project implemented by UP to replace the UP IKOT Jeepneys that are pollutants.

IMO, Ayala Company should also construct a monorail system from EDSA/Buendia MRT Station going thru Makati CBD ending at Ayala/EDSA MRT STation.

This will eliminate the Makati Loop Jeepneys and restrict the buses passing thru Ayala/Buendia to eliminate these pollutants and traffic along these two Avenues.

Buses are still cheaper than rail and they can use existing infrastructure (roads).

Buses are still cheaper than rail and they can use existing infrastructure (roads).

But they also add to the existing heavy traffic, not really the solution to the ever increasing traffic problem in the metro.

dba Sir less aifr pollutant and much faster travel ang monorail vs the bendy-buses dahil electric run and no stop lights? sabi sa news article, less noise pollutant pero air pollutant pa din, unless electric or CNG buses and gamitin nila. agree din ako with GH, it will not solve the traffic problems.

mas mahal ang monorail but in the long run, mas advantageous for the people and would solve the traffic problem, air pollution, noise pollution, and long travel time.
