I've owned and driven more than a dozen cars through
the years. I can honestly say that it is in my Echo that
I have the most fun driving. I even prefer to drive my Echo
more often than my other car - a Honda CR-V.
The 2000 Echo was brought here Completely Built Up (CBU)
from Japan that's why it was expensive (tariff matters). But
being CBU-Japan is actually a plus factor as the little thing is
so durable that I had no major part replaced since buying it 6
years ago. The Panasonic car battery that came with it lasted
4 years before it gave in.
The Echo was both Japanese Car of the Year and European Car
of the Year in 2000. There are not many cars that can boast of that
distinction. The Echo was also the first car model where Toyota
installed its then new VVT-i engine. And it was in the Echo that
the VVTi engine won the International Engine of the Year award
    also in 2000.
Having said that, the P580 Thousand that I shelled out 6 years
ago to buy a brand new Echo was well worth it.
    Hey tJ

You still have your echo? COOL Sold mine 2 years ago

    Anyway

Its like buying the previous echo echo with a different shell and interior
    same engine same chassis

I dont think you can really say it's a mistake because as you can see toyota is not really pushing yaris to sell like hotcakes its really up to us if we buy it or not... I think they introduced yaris to the Philippine market because they wanted us to have more choices or selections in choosing Toyota cars.. so that we wont be stuck in just choosing between a vios or an altis if we have the money to spend.. I think one of the reasons why Toyota is the number 1 car company here because they offer various selections of cars for different people and for their different preferences and needs.
I think they are pushing it, i see their yaris commercials and ads more times than i see a brand new yaris in the street. Their marketing is pushing for the yaris and they are spending money to advertise the car. But by bringing in the 1.5L Yaris is a sign that they wanna fight head on with the suzuki swift and Jazz VTEC. Its good that they are giving us a selection but not a good one at that. I know that this may be the only model available to the asean market but if they really want to give us a good selection then they would have opted to bring in the yaris diesel or yaris 2 door insted.
