Toyota Models Dominate the Philippines Market in Vehicle Initial Quality

SINGAPORE: 01 December 2005 — Toyota models—the Corolla Altis and Revo—rank highest in both segments included in the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2005 Philippines Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) released today.

Now in its third year, the study is independently conducted by J.D. Power Asia Pacific to measure new-vehicle quality in the first two to six months of ownership. The study focuses on 135 problem symptoms affecting quality across nine IQS problem categories: ride, handling and braking; features and controls; seats; heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC); sound system; vehicle exterior; vehicle interior; transmission; and engine. The overall model performance is summarized as the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles (PP100). The industry quality performance remains constant over 2004, recording an average initial quality score of 102 PP100.

The Toyota Corolla Altis ranks highest in the midsize car segment. With a 19 percent improvement since 2004, the Nissan Sentra follows the Corolla Altis in the segment rankings with 116 PP100. The Honda Civic ranks third at 137 PP100.

The Toyota Revo has the fewest reported problems (91 PP100) in the entry SUV segment and the fewest reported problems on six of the nine IQS categories. The Mitsubishi Adventure follows with 118 PP100—a 42 PP100 improvement over 2004. The Isuzu Crosswind ranks third with 149 PP100.

"Strong initial quality evaluations can be seen in the performances of Toyota models in each of the segments they compete in," said Gerrit Kuyntjes, general manager at J.D. Power Asia Pacific. "Toyota’s consistent initial quality performance helps establish their reputation for quality."

The study also reveals that nearly all customers (96%) who have experienced no problems with their new vehicles say they are "pleased" (rating it an 8 or 9 on a 10-point scale) or "delighted" (rating of 10) with their overall ownership experience. They also register strong intentions to recommend their model, with more than three in four customers stating they definitely would recommend the model to others. In contrast, fewer than four out of 10 of customers who report five or more problems indicate a similar intent.

The 2005 Philippines Initial Quality Study is based on evaluations of more than 1,000 vehicle owners of 18 models representing six makes, and includes owners who purchased their vehicles between December 2004 and June 2005.
