if you look at the picture in the next post.. the pcv is where the tube on the upper right hand side of the valve cover.. it's very cheap and very vital to the health of your oil.. 'yan lang ang purpose ng pcv.. to vent sludge causing contaminants back to the intake.. some even advise to put an "oil catch can".. synth or non synth pag barado na yang pcv guaranteed 100% ang sludging over a very short time..

August 16th, 2010 12:48 PM #25Exactly the same opinion I have on this issue!
I understand there are benefits with using Fully-syn compared to Semi-syn and Mineral Oils. But I am more inclined to the more often you change the engine oil, oil filter, air filter....the better for your engine.
I have clocked almost 20,000kms from July 2009 to July 2010 since I got my '05 Altis from my aunt. Its a mixed of home to office use from Paranaque to Makati, and weekend married man chores and mall trips and of course twice a month visit to the in-laws at Cainta........my sister also borrows my car for her hatid-sundo to school also via her driver during weekdays. So the 30+ kms combined to and from distance from Paranaque to Makati becomes times two when my sister borrows the car for her school.
So you can see how utilized my car is. But I adhere to the 5,000kms change oil. Listed below is the cost I incur for the change oil.
Using Fully-Syn for 10,000kms might be cheaper and have some good benefits, but it seems using Semi-syn every 5,000kms will be healthier for the engine.
=============================
Semi-Synthetic Oil:
--- Shell Helix Plus 10w-40 (Blue) / Semi-Syn = Php 320 / Liter x 4 = Php 1,280 per Gal
--- VIC Oil filter = Php 150
--- Labor = Php 200
Cost per 5,000 kms PMS for Semi-syn = Php 1,630
=============================
Fully-Synthetic Oil:
--- Royal Purple 10w-30 / Fully-Syn = Php 550 / Liter x 4 = Php 2,200 per Gal
--- VIC Oil filter = Php 150
--- Labor = Php 200
Cost per 10,000 kms PMS for Fully-Syn = Php 2,550

Balak ko gawin na lang na every 5,000kms palit kahit full syn. VTEC LEV Full syn na oil na lang gagamitin ko na 10w40 para mas mura around 1.5k yung 1 gallon niya.

September 16th, 2010 10:56 AM #28So after reviewing the posts here in Tsikot, searching the web and youtube. I plan to use Shell Semi-Syn 10w-40 (Blue) instead....and change my oil earlier at 4,000kms instead of 5,000kms.
Before I sold my previous car; a 1993 XE Big Body, I change its oil every 3,000kms with Toyota 20w-50 Mineral oil, mura per liter nito at Php155/liter.
My dad also changes the oil of his 1994 Nissan Safari every 3,000kms. Better for the engine talaga ang early oil change especialy sa driving conditions dito sa PH.

September 16th, 2010 08:30 PM #30My last changed oil on my 9th gen Altis was still Nov 2009 with toyota fully synthetic. My ODO reading was then 60K km. Its almost a year already and my ODO reading right now is only 67K. I changed the oil filter when it was 65K. I regularly check the oil on the dip stick and seems to be okay. Malabnaw pa.
What is the symptom of sludging? Is there any unusual sound on the engine? Do I need to change my oil already. Appreciate your inputs..
