Two ways to check clutch performance:

    1. Engaging problem check.
    2. Disengaging problem check.

    ENGAGING PROBLEM CHECK

    1. Your engine operating temperature should be at Normal.
    2. Be sure aircon off.
    3. Apply fully hand brake.
    4. Depress fully brake pedal with your right foot (Note: Do not depress accelerator pedal).
    5. Depress clutch pedal with your left foot.
    6. Shift the transmission into High gear (4th or 5th gear).
    7. Slowly release clutch pedal.

    EVALUATION:

    1. If the engine stopped: Your clutch OK.
    2. If the engine did not stop. REPLACE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY (CLUTCH SLIDING)

    DISENGAGING PROBLEM CHECK

    1. Your engine operating temperature shpuld be at normal.
    2. A/C off
    3. Apply fully hand brake.
    4. No need to depress brake pedal but do not depress accelerator pedal.
    5. Shift the gear into reverse slowly without depressing clutch pedal.
( at this time you will hear crunching noise)
    6. Depress clutch pedal slowly while you are shifting into reverse.
    7. Check the distance between flooring and clutch pedal (min 3 inches) when the cruching sound gone at the same time shifted into reverse completely.

    EVALUATION

If the crunching sound doesn't dis-appear. DIS-ENGAGE PROBLEM.

    Check the following:
    1. Pedal height.
    2. pedal pre-play (If all ok)

    REPLACE CLUTCH ASSEMLY.

NOTE: When you replace clutch assembly remove flywheel and replace oil seal. To save labor cost 'coz expect 3 to 6 months this due for replacement.

You need to bring that to a mechanic. I experienced a similar problem long ago with my Beetle popping out of 2nd gear. It was diagnosed to be a worn synchronizer. In your case it could be other parts of the tranny that has a problem.
