MANILA, Philippines – Starting April 1, residents of Metro Manila and parts of Cavite and Rizal provinces will be paying less for their water consumption due to a stronger peso.
The new rate was approved Tuesday by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office headed by Government Corporate Counsel Alberto Agra. The reduction is in addition to the 20 percent decrease in rates for low-income households announced Monday.
Clients of concessionaire Manila Water will enjoy a per cubic meter decrease of P0.62 while customers of Maynilad, another concessionaire, will get a P0.34 drop in per cubic meter rate.
A statement released by Malacañang said the reduction, resulting from the peso’s strong performance against the US dollar and other currencies, would affect all consumers.
“For low-income households, the reduction will be on top of the 20 percent decrease,” said the MWSS.
The strong peso would lead to the decrease in the Foreign Currency Differential Adjustment effective this month, the agency added.
The reduction rates for Manila Water: from P88.43 to P86.94 (10 cu. m.) or a reduction of P1.49; from P194.31 to P190.99 (20 cu. m.) or a decrease of P3.31; from P395.01 to P388.25 (30 cu. m.) or a decrease of P6.76; and P2,388.75 to P2,347.72 (100 cu. m.) or a decrease of P41.03.
On the other hand, Maynilad residential customers paying about P502.36 (10 cu. m) will pay P498.63 or a P3.74 rate; semi-business, from P677.85 to P672.70 (P5.14 rate decrease); business group 1, P4,798.55 to P4,761.02 (P37.53); and business group 2, from P5,189.56 to P5,148.89 (P40.67).
President Macapagal-Arroyo instructed the MWSS Thursday to explore other ways of lowering water rates and look into the possibility of extending the concession agreement for another 10 years.
The extension can lead to a 40 percent reduction in water rate, said the MWSS.
Also being considered is the extension of the MWSS service area to include the province of Bulacan, thus expanding the agency’s consumer base that would lead to a significant decrease in water bills.
