American Suzuki to stop selling cars in the US due to bankruptcy
    Words by Christopher Kho

Yep, that's right. American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC), which distributes automobiles, motorcycles, ATVs, marine products, and relates parts and accessories in the US, has gone bankrupt. Well, it's actually a bit worse than that. They're now in the process of filing for Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code to protect them for a US$346 million debt. Thus, they have decided to stop selling cars in the US, which includes the Kizashi, SX4, Grand Vitara, and Equator.

ASMC has cited “various factors such as economic conditions including the currency exchange rate, market trends, the models of Suzuki automobiles sold in the U.S. which are primarily small cars, ASMC’s projected sales volume, and the stringent U.S. environmental and safety regulations” as their reasons for pulling the plug. On the contrary, they're redirecting all resources to its motorcycle, ATV, and marine business which still looks to be profitable.

Suzuki has been forced for years to sell rebadged Daewoos in the United States.

They're completely irrelevant there now. All they have is the SX4 and the Kizashi.

I have no idea why Suzuki of America has not considered the Swift for federalization. There's pent-up demand for it there, and they could easily sell at least as many units as Fiat does the 500.

It's about time they pulled out. Concentrate money and resources on more relevant markets like India and Asia.

It's sad news because the Kizashi is a very good car, one of the best they've ever made - a left-field, very athletic and more compact alternative to your usual midsize sedan. Think Suzuki's version of the Acura TSX, with a great chassis and drivetrain, less premium content and a more mass-market price, and you're halfway to what the Kizashi is.

The problem for the Kizashi is the Mazda6 is bigger, roomier, more luxurious, just as light and just as athletic (though I feel the Kizashi might have better turn-in...).

Aaaaand... the Mazda6 doesn't sell in America, either. They don't call it the Camcord segment for nuthin'.
