My car (Toyota Altis, 2003, 1.6E) due for replacement na yung steering rack end. One shop recommended to replace also the tie rod end.

usually the inner tie rod goes out first followed by the tie rod end. if the tie rod end passes the articulation test, it should still be okay to reuse. articulation test is done while holding the threaded taper end and watching the body if it holds up against dropping from gravity. if it still could maintain its position, the tie rod end is still serviceable

*jick - Thanks. Just another inquiry, the inner tie rod is the same the steering rack end in Altis? I am looking in some pictures/diagrams parang parehas sila. Thanks again

there are two major pieces to the tie rod aside from the jam nuts or locking devices: the part connected to the steering knuckle is the tie rod end ( this the part where the two sections form a 90 degree angle). the other piece is the inner tie rod which is connected to the steering gear (rack and pinion) assembly. the inner tie rod usually comes ambidextrous. the tie rod end sometimes are driver side or passenger side oriented. but they all are right hand threaded.

    bosing,

could i demand an articulation test?
is this available outside the casa? (under chasis specialist shops)
anong ginagamit na "lingo" (translation of articulation) sa mga mechanics?

Hmmm, most mechanics should know about that. Just tell them you want to visually check if the tie rod end is still good. They'll do the gravity test so you can see for yourself.

It's simple enough actually. They'll just decouple the tie rod end from the steering knuckle (this part is on the wheel hub), and let it drop while it hangs from the rack end. I've seen this done on my old 1999 SX8 Honda City and it did drop, so it was time for replacement. Sorry no photos but I think you can get the general idea.
