Wider tires will not affect gearing. Only shorter or taller tires will. But not to a great degree. You can go two sizes up or down and still maintain decent driveability.

1) more tire choices, therefore prices are lower
2) more rim choices, therefore prices are lower
3) bottom line is mas mura talaga

would 33" tires fit a stock height hi-lux? sometimes 33" tires on 2" lifted hi-lux rubs on the front when turning during compression.
