Off road tires larger than the OEM will affect the fuel consumption and it is going to be higher. M/T's wear faster and most don't handle very well on the street much less a wet road. Keep in mind they are called mud terrains for a reason, they work better on loose soft dirt and muddy terrain. The tread patterns are made to grab dirt/mud with big and wide threads and soft compound rubber. This also means when it's on a hard surface such as the street it will flex and you don't have as much rubber meeting the road. Additionally the same design that grabs the mud also doesn't encourage water evacuation on wet roads. If you want a meaner looking off road tire the best compromise for the street is a A/T. I know of guys using the BF Goodrich AT/ko that used them until 75K miles or 120K Km on the tire and that's with some serious rock crawling.
