Ateneo was on the brink of losing a game against the lowly University of the Philippines, but got a lucky break in the end after Mikee Reyes missed two game-winning free throws that allowed the Blue Eagles to escape with a 70-69 win in UAAP Season 77 action Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Reyes, who waxed hot in the fourth quarter with 15 points, had the chance to complete a Fighting Maroons comeback with a victory after being sent to the line with 0.8 seconds left as Ateneo held on to a one-point lead.
But he muffed both free throws as Ateneo came away with the win.
Ateneo led by as much as 10 points, 56-46, in the third quarter, but UP came back after a 13-3 run fueled by Reyes to tie the game at 59-all.
Kiefer Ravena sank bigtime baskets down the stretch to keep UP at bay, but UP wouldn’t go down without a fight as Reyes buried a crucial triple to keep UP within one, 70-69, with 42 seconds remaining.
After a Blue Eagles miscue, Kyles Lao lost the ball for the Fighting Maroons. But Ateneo got called with an illegal screen on the other end, giving UP the chance to take the game-winning shot with 17.3 seconds remaining.
Diego Dario attacked to the basket, but his shot from point-blank range just failed to trickle in, forcing UP to send Ravena with 10.1 seconds left.
Ravena missed both free throws, and got called for a lane violation as he tried to get the rebound.
Reyes then attempted a game-winning jumper, and got a break after fishing a foul from Chris Newsome with 0.8 seconds left, sending the UP guard to the line which he failed to take advantage.
Ravena finished with 18 points, five rebounds and seven assists for Ateneo (8-3).
Reyes scored 19 points, while JR Gallarza added 18 markers in the heartbreaking loss for UP (1-10).Last edited by chrismarte; September 3rd, 2014 at 05:44 PM.

It is ugly if you win because your opponent allows you to.
This is an ugly win by Ateneo.
Hope this does not happen again.
Kudos to UP for showing great heart.
GO ATENEO! OBF!

Looks like that the semi-finals cast is shaping up to be:
Ateneo vs NU or UE
FEU v La Salle
Ang hindi pa alam ay sino ang may siguradong twice to beat advantage although Ateneo already has one foot in the door on this.
Pag ma silat ang La Salle sa UE this Wednesday, loko loko na, hehehehe
GO ATENEO! OBF!
