Filipino boxers won all eight fights in Sunday's "Invasion: Philippines vs The World" tournament at the Araneta Coliseum. Malacaņang praised Filipino boxers, led by Gerry Peņalosa, for winning their fights.
In a statement, deputy Palace spokeswoman Lorelei Fajardo said that like boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, the victories of Peņalosa, Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ "Bazooka" Banal against their foreign opponents showed the "true character" of the Filipinos.
They excel in sports and are willing to face challenges to achieve victory, she said.
Fajardo said that Filipinos should emulate the winning ways of the boxers because "their victory is also a victory" for the entire nation.
Peņalosa beats Thai fighter
His age clearly did not show, because despite being 35, Gerry Peņalosa dominated the fight against a 31-year old Thai opponent during the main event of the "Invasion: Philippines vs The World" card at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday.
Peņalosa, a Cebu native, outpunched challenger Ratanachai Sor Vorapin and won via technical knockout.
Referee Gino Rodriguez prevented the fighters from continuing the bout after seeing that the Thai boxer could no longer trade punches with 29 seconds remaining in Round 8.
The Filipino scored two knockdowns against Vorapin during the course of the 12-rounder. In Round 5, the 31-year-old Thai was nearly floored, but managed to cling on Peņalosa's waist.
Peņalosa said he saw Vorapin as one determined fighter who defended himself throughout the bout.
Asked who he plans to take on next, Peņalosa answered: "No one else but the one who beat Boom Boom Bautista -- (Daniel) Ponce de Leon."
Peņalosa now has a win-loss slate of 52-6 with 35 knockouts while Vorapin dropped to 72-10 with 48 KOs.
Boom Boom wins in 2nd round
Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista, meanwhile, showed top form as he retained the WBO intercontinental junior featherweight crown against Genaro Camargo of Mexico.
The 12-rounder, one of three main events of the "Invasion" card, ended 57 seconds in Round 2 after referee Bruce McTavish of New Zealand stopped the fight.
Bautista, a Bohol native, also hit Camargo with a series of right punches that sent the Mexican down twice in Round 1.
Bautista improved his win-loss record to 25-1 with 18 knockouts. Camargo, meanwhile, now has a 16-4 slate, with 10 KOs.
Bazooka TKOs Herrera
Earlier, another Filipino boxer, AJ "Bazooka" Banal, threw a right-left-right combination to beat Uruguay's Caril Herrera for the IBF super flyweight eliminator.
Banal won by technical knockout after the referee stopped the fight 1:18 in Round 4. This came after Herrera staggered to the ropes following Banal's hard punches.
In Round 3, Banal floored the Uruguayan in the closing seconds.
The Filipino southpaw is still unbeaten with 17 wins and 1 draw, 13 of them coming via knockouts.
Herrera, meanwhile, now has a 21-1 record, with 13 KOs.
Undercards score, too
Banal's victory came after another Filipino won against a South Korean fighter Sunday.
Ciso "Kid Terrible" Morales retained the WBO Oriental junior featherweight crown against South Korea's Yoo Shin Kim in one of the undercard bouts.
Morales won by TKO after the referee stoped the fight in Round 5.
The Filipino thus improved his win-loss record to an unblemished 11-0.
Yoo, meanwhile, dropped to 6-2.
In one of the televised undercard fights, Davao City's Jessie Albaracin defeated John Mark Apolinario.
Judges saw it for Albaracin of Sarangani province after he knocked down Apolinario in Round 1 of the four-round fight for the super flyweight division (115 lbs).
With the win, Albaracin improved his win-loss record to 5-1 with 3 draws.
Apolinario, meanwhile, notched his first loss in 9 outings.
Gerry: I'm not getting any younger
Meanwhile, Peņalosa has set his sights on World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon to avenge his loss during their first meeting.
"I’m looking forward to fighting Ponce de Leon," Peņalosa said during the post-fight press conference of the "Invasion: Philippine vs. the World" card.
Peņalosa also jokingly appealed to Bautista. "Let me fight him (de Leon) first, please," he told Bautista while laughing, "I’m not getting any younger anymore."
De Leon beat Bautista via a Round 1 knockout in August last year. Five months earlier, de Leon outpointed Peņalosa.
"When the rematch between me and de Leon is arranged, I have to be careful. I really have to prepare," said Peņalosa.
'Peņalosa deserves to fight big names'
For his part, Eric Gomez, vice-president of Golden Boy Promotions outfit that handles Peņalosa's fights, said the champion’s wish can be arranged since he deserves it.
"Ponce de leon has indicated that he likes to fight. He’s willing to come over here. The first fight was a very good fight, that’s a possibility," he said.
He added that aside from de Leon, they can also arrange a face off between Peņalosa and other big names including the brother of former WBC champion Juan Manuel Marquez, Rafael.
"Gerry wants big names. He’s willing to fight Rafael Marquez, Ponce de Leon, Israel Vasquez… any of the top names. I think that he deserves it," said Gomez.
Jaime Quintana, co-promoter of the Marquez brothers, said he has no problem with a possible match between Peņalosa and Rafael.
"Thank you very much for considering Rafael, Gerry Peņalosa is a great fighter and champion. We would be pleased to fight Gerry Peņalosa anytime possible," he said.
Vorapin hurts Peņalosa
The WBO bantamweight champion, meanwhile, admitted getting hurt during his match with Vorapin.
"Many times," said Peņalosa, "on the second round and the fifth round. But it’s okay... If you want to win, you will do everything."
He, however, said that if he was hurt, more so was Vorapin.
The Thai ended having a bloodied nose and several small cuts in the forehead.
"I made a mistake of throwing wide punches. Gerry has a very hard punch," said Vorapin.
Peņalosa had little problem in dealing with Vorapin as he threw a barrage of combinations which jarred the Thai boxer in Rounds 4 and 5.
At the start of Round 6, Peņalosa raised both of his hands as if to signal the beginning of an end.
It came on Round 8, when he decked a wobbly Vorapin. Peņalosa then unleashed a finisher combo against the helpless Thai, prompting the referee to stop the fight with 29 seconds remaining in Round 8.
