    from NBA.com:

Making A List, Checking It Twice ...

For two weeks, NBA GMs could look at free agents but they couldn't touch.
They had their lists and they went window shopping, pressing their noses against the display windows searching for a defensive stopper here, a post-presence there and scorers anywhere.

On Wednesday, July 16, it's finally Christmas in July as GMs can sign and wrap up the free agents they put on layaway during the past two weeks.

And while winners and losers in this free-agent shopping spree cannot be determined for a while (final records and a championship will determine a true winner), we can begin looking in the shopping bags and see who received the most quality at the greatest value.

An immediate check of items purchased would indicate that the Lakers will be the leaders when pens are put to paper on Wednesday. The Lakers not only will sign two future Hall of Famers in Gary Payton (third on our list of top free-agent point guards) and power forward Karl Malone (fourth on our list of top free-agent power fowards), but they will also sign them for (professional sports) "bargain-basement" prices. (NBA.com)

Still, the near certainty of Payton and Malone heading West hasn't stopped other teams from trying to woo them before Wednesday. (L.A. Times)

(Still, the people of Utah are starting to move forward. The Salt Lake Tribune ran a Mailman retrospective this weekend.)

So, how does everyone one else feel the Lakers made out? Here's what one NBA coach said: "Odds are, the Lakers are going to be 75-7." (New York Times)

Yeah, that'd be a record. The Matrix Reloaded didn't get that kind of hype.

Though, some aren't so sure this Lakers edition will be headed for greatness. (Long Beach Press-Telegram)

Another SoCal columnist says the Lakers will be incredible. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

That's all well and good, but what do NBA.com fans think? Read for yourself! (NBA.com)

The Lakers, however, weren't the only winners in the free-agent blowout sale. Here's a list of those teams that may pat themselves on the back for a job well-done (so far) this summer.

    New Jersey
The Nets will keep Jason Kidd (No. 1 free-agent point guard). One Northern Jersey columnist knew the Nets had Kidd in the bag from the beginning. (Bergen County Record)

They also plan to sign Alonzo Mourning (No. 3 rated free-agent center). For Zo, it's about the ring. The Nets hope that he is healthy. (NBA.com, Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel)

    Indiana
The Pacers plan to retain Jermaine O'Neal (second-rated power forward). That, and they hired Larry Bird as President of Basketball Operations. (NBA.com, Pacers.com)

    Orlando
It looks as if the Magic will ink Juwan Howard (the fifth-rated power forward) on Wednesday. That should give them some help in the frontcourt. (Orlando Sentinel)

    Denver
The Nuggets have loads of cap space and aren't afraid to use it. Clippers point guard Andre Miller (No. 4 point guard) looks like he may take some of it off the Nuggets' hands. (Denver Post)

And what if you don't get your man or men? Then you go to plan B (or even Z). (New York Times)

Here are the teams now looking at someone else.

    San Antonio
They fell short in the Jason Kidd sweepstakes and are still looking for a big man to play alongside of Tim Duncan. One San Antonio columnist laments the Spurs' "loss" of Kidd. I say, you can't lose what you didn't have. (San Antonio Express-News)

The Spurs striking out means other teams, like the Knicks, may also be missing out on their first choices as well. (New York Post)

    Dallas
The Mavericks remind me of me in high school: they've been rejected by everyone. The Mavs have their eye on Brad Miller (the No. 2 ranked free-agent center) and a couple of smaller free-agent fish. (Dallas Morning News, NBA.com)

    Minnesota
The Wolves supposedly had the inside track on Howard. Now, they need to re-sign center Rasho Nesterovic (No. 4 among free-agent centers) before the Spurs make a move for him. (San Antonio Express-News)

Then, there are those teams who have called in the contractors -- Miami and Milwaukee -- to help them rebuild, though the Heat may be interested in Gilbert Arenas (our second-rated point guard), who won't be headed to Denver. (San Francisco Chronicle)

And what can you say about the Clippers, who have five free agents? See what NBA.com's own Randy Kim had to say about the Clippers' options. (NBA.com)

Finally, an interesting angle on how the East may be matching the West in the free-agent derby. While many disagree, I won't argue. I love the East and the West equally, as if they were my children. (Washington Post)

But I think kulang pa sa fire power ang Spurs this coming season for them to match-up with the souped-up Lakers. Sana mag milagro at makuha rin nila si Elton Brand balang araw

i would like to see how the lineup of shaq, kobe, malone, payton works out. in an nba game, a team normally has 80-90 shot attempts. so that leaves 20 shots each for the 4 superstars. kaso, there are other players on the team who has to shoot also. how you will you pace those players who got used on getting the ball every nite? si shaq ma-reklamo pag di nabibigyan ng bola. si kobe dupang at times. isa lang ang basketball...paano kaya ma-sa-satisfy ni phil jackson yung 4 na stars???
