Ginebra puts Santos on unrestricted list

RODNEY Santos, one of the few PBA players to win championships at least twice in two different teams, may find himself not playing at all with the Ginebra Gin Kings.

That’s because the man called as The Slasher wasn’t included on the regular roster after he was placed in an unrestricted list.

A highly-placed source told People’s Tonight that Santos, who won championships with Alaska and Ginebra, said that the veteran guard was disappointed to learn that he was on the unrestricted list despite his god showing in the pre-season.

“Maganda ipinapakita niya sa off season eh, tapos biglang malalagay siya sa unrestricted list. Syempre, sasama loob niya,” said the source, who requested anonymity.

But Danny Espiritu, Santos’ agent/manager, said that his ward took it professionally and that they have no plans of finding another team.

“Ok naman siya. Wala kaming balak lumipat. We will wait for the right opportunity with Ginebra,” said Espiritu in a telephone interview.

Drafted second overall by Purefoods in 1996, the 6-1, former San Sebastian Stag was bumped off after Ginebra took in guards Macky Escalona from the draft and Paul Artadi from the free agency list.

And with Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand expected to return, Santos will have to wait for the right time.

Meanwhile, Purefoods is again reportedly eyeing Brandon Cablay after veteran guard Noy Castillo got injured.

Cablay, whose rights now belong to Red Bull, didn’t even see action during the pre-season, fueling speculations that the 6-0, Fil-Am guard is heading somewhere.

The Bulls already have rookie Jojo Duncil and Kiko Adriano, who was part of the package of the Larry Fonacier trade in the off season, to backstop Cyrus Baguio, Celino Cruz and Topex Robinson.

Red Bull mentor Yeng Guiao didn’t deny the fact that Purefoods is in hot pursuit of Cablay.

“Nagpakita ulit ng interes yung Purefoods sa kanya eh. About the details of the negotiations, hindi ko na alam,” said Guiao.

But a source disclosed that the Bulls are reportedly seeking a first-round pick in exchange for Cablay, a thing which Purefoods doesn’t want to give up.

Artadi inks P1.2M pact with Ginebra

Paul Artadi, the disgruntled Purefoods guard who found his way to Barangay Ginebra just two weeks ago, recently signed a one-year P1.2 million pact with the Gin Kings.
Artadi who spent the first three years of his career with the Tender Juicy Giants after being drafted in the first round, will now play behind Jay-Jay Helterbrand and Johnny Abarrientos coming off the bench for the Kings.
Artadi never really blossomed into the vital cog of a player he was expected to be when he entered the league. And his career took a turn for the worse when he and Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio had a falling out.
With Ginebra, Artadi will get to learn a lot from Abarrientos.

    Tubid’s fruity tale

When Tubid was playing for the Red Warriors of UE in the (UAAP), not many knew that he worked as a part-time kargador in his aunt’s fruit stand in Divisoria.
Now, the 26-year-old Barangay Ginebra spitfire provides fruits to vendors with his delivery business.

“This is my first business at ako lang nagha-handle nito kasi maliit na business lang naman,” said Tubid. “PBA pa rin ang priority ko.”
The Iloilo City native plays the wholesaler in this business and immediately disposes the fruits to his buyers, who mostly have fruit stands in Divisoria.
His products mostly come from the provinces, like Camiguin for lanzones, Guimaras for mangoes and Davao for suha. “May mga kausap na akong tao doon. Sila ang nagbibigay sa akin ng mga prutas na dadalhin sa Divisoria,” Tubid explained.

The flamboyant six-foot-one guard says his cousins are helping him in this business, but during the off-season, he finds time to monitor the business.

Tubid admits that the profit in this kind of business is not that much because the capital is also less compared with other businesses, but he’s satisfied with how things are going.

“I just want to keep myself busy at para matulungan na rin ang mga pinsan ko,” said Tubid. “Hindi naman talaga ganoon kalaki ang kita dito.”
Just like in any other business, the cager has encountered challenges, like the competition between fruits coming from the north and south, as the former is cheaper because of less cost in transportation.

But that’s just part of the trade, says Tubid, as he maintains that his fruit-delivery business doesn’t demand too much capital.
“As long as there are harvests, people would buy fruits because they are healthy, although mahirap din kasi ’yung ibang fruits, seasonal talaga,” said Tubid.

Tubid is also planning to put up a salon, and right now he’s looking for a business partner. He also intends to put up a restaurant or be a broker of fish in his province.
“Baka temporary lang kasi ’yung delivery business ko. Gusto ko kasi magkaroon ng negosyo na pamilyar ako, like ’yung pagiging broker ng mga isda. Iyon kasi ang nakasanayan ko sa province namin,” he explained.

Tubid is only in his fifth year in the PBA, but it seems that he’s preparing ahead for his retirement. And this is something that other players must emulate, though a risky one.
“It helps us to be focused on where to invest and how to manage your finances,” said Tubid. “But go into a business na sanay kayo, although this is something that you take risks also,” he noted.

With Artadi joining BGK, i think they will just be grooming him for the possible retirement of the Flying A probably next year. Dapat wag sya mag-expect ng playing time for now.

    3 Punches Cost Seigle P10,000

The PBA yesterday slapped a P10,000 fine on Magnolia’s Danny Seigle for punching Ginebra’s forward Billy Mamaril three times during their team’s tune-up game last Wednesday at the Green Meadows gym.

The scuffle was witnessed by PBA technical chief Perry Martinez, who was around to brief the teams on the league’s new rules.

Game tape showed that after excessive physical jostling and elbowing exchanges inside the paint with Mamaril, the sweet-shooting Seigle, without any provocation, threw three punches on the Ginebra cager.

“If not for the intervention of cooler heads and the inability of Mamaril to counteract Seigle’s punches, the incident would have gotten worse,” PBA officer-in-charge Sonny Barrios said.

Barrios said the offense would easily draw a stiffer fine and a suspension under the rules had the incident taken place in a regular PBA game.

“Since that infraction occurred during a practice game and not sanctioned by the league, we shall not apply the usual rules,” Barrios told Seigle.

The league OIC spared Mamaril from any sanction since the Ginebra forward didn’t engage Seigle in the commotion.
