    Adducul shipped to Purefoods
    Thursday, May 31, 2007

Rommel Adducul has landed with Purefoods Chunkee Giants after a two-day layover with Red Bull.

Adducul ended up with the Giants following the completion of a three-way trade deal among Red Bull, San Miguel Beer and Purefoods.

Purefoods got Adducul in exchange for Don Camaso after Red Bull earlier acquired him from San Miguel in a surprise deal for Enrico Villanueva.

The PBA Commissioner’s Office is expected to receive the trade paper any time which league observers deemed one-sided for the SMC group.

However, Red Bull officials maintained they just wanted the best for their players who no longer wanted to play for the Bulls.

Apparently, Villanueva had been asking to be traded as early as last season.

Red Bull cited insubordination in delisting Villanueva from the “Restricted Trade List,” paving the way for his transfer to San Miguel. Under the restricted list, Villanueva could be traded only to Danny Seigle at San Miguel.

Some quarters said there could be monetary consideration involved in the package despite San Miguel and Purefoods gaining marquee players while Red Bull settled for a third-string guard in Camaso.

But Red Bull officials said they are indeed interested on Camaso, who played for the team back in the PBL.

Purefoods is excited over the entry of Adducul.

Kerby Raymundo, for one, had said he’s had long wanted to have a dependable partner to ease the load at the paint.

“I’ve been playing 4 or 5 and defending against imports and I’ve wanted to have a reliable reliever,” Raymundo said. – Nelson Beltran

Ha-ha! Ginawang bola si Adducul, pinagpasa-pasahan. Baka next time sa Air21 na yan. Matagal na rin gusto siyang kunin, noon pa. GF niya ata (o asawa na) yung anak ng may-ari, si Alvarez, di ba?

    Competitive balance?

    BY RONNIE NATHANIELSZ

SOME months ago, we were distressed to learn from a highly respected member of the Philippine Basketball Association board of governors that PBA vice chairman and Red Bull team manager Tony Chua was peddling Enrico Villanueva and other key players on the Red Bull team to any team that was willing and able to pay the asking price which amounted to millions.

At that time, we informed commissioner Noli Eala about what we learned and he told us, quite clearly, that Villanueva was on the “Restricted Players List,” and could only be traded to another team for a similarly restricted player. In short, no team could simply buy or sell Villanueva.

We were therefore stunned to learn that Villanueva had been taken off the restricted list apparently based on a letter of complaint to commissioner Eala from Chua citing alleged gross insubordination and other related acts and that he had been traded to San Miguel Beer in exchange for Romel Adducul. This is most intriguing especially since the announcement was made in Ratchaburi after Chua reportedly flew to Thailand to meet with San Miguel Corp.’s Robert Non.

To begin with, the Uniform Players Contract has provisions under which a team can sanction a player for the violations attributed to Villanueva and could even appeal to the Commissioner’s Office to take action. To de-list Villanueva from the restricted list would seem to us a reward for a player seemingly guilty of conduct unbecoming a professional. This becomes especially telling since he was traded to San Miguel Beer who, at last count, had won nine games in a row and whose management is known to look after its players particularly well.

If this is the means by which a player can be stricken off the restricted list, then what is there to prevent other players from doing the same thing? It doesn’t make sense. Besides, since Villanueva is going to probably the wealthiest corporation in the PBA, it strengthens the contention that money talks. That should never be the case if the competitive balance of the league is important and there is a sincere desire to maintain the integrity of the PBA.

What compounds the felony is that we understand Red Bull is now turning around and trading Adducul to another San Miguel Corp. owned team, Purefoods, in exchange for Don Camaso. When considered against Eala’s letter to Chua in which he stated that the Restricted Trading List policy was “meant to balance and find objectivity in trades and not to cripple or stifle the ability of teams to improve performance,” the ultimate result of the de-listing and the trade turns out to be a monumental joke.

What really exposes the charade is the Red Bull press release which stated that the team “approved Villanueva’s trade after management learned that he is no longer happy playing with us.” In addition, they wished Villanueva the best of luck and claimed Red Bull would remain the “same fierce, competitive team.” Such actions and statements insult the intelligence of basketball fans. What we personally resent is the fact that some individuals in the PBA think we are stupid.

If indeed, commissioner Eala, as gleaned by his letter to the teams explaining the de-listing of Villanueva acted on the basis of Chua’s allegations, we need to know whether Enrico was given a chance to air his side and if so, what did he say or were Chua’s statements accepted as the gospel truth? Because Enrico’s image has been tarnished by the claims of Chua and his ability to attract endorsements, undermined. Surely, SMC, which prides itself on the excellent behavior of its players on and off the court, wouldn’t sacrifice those principles merely to get a star player—or would they? It also raises the issue of Villanueva’s inclusion in the Philippine Team. How in heaven’s name can a player who is guilty of insubordination and other infractions be named to the National Team? Don’t we set exemplary standards of behavior for those who are given the honor and privilege of wearing our national colors or like most other things in national society today, are we discarding values and virtues in the quest to win at all cost?

The PBA, rightly or wrongly, has long been perceived as a San Miguel league. That was diminished somewhat by the sale of Coca-Cola to its parent company but not before its ranks were raided, turning Coke into a toothless tiger with all due respects to such fine players as John Arigo and Ali Peek, among others. When the Beermen needed a big man, they once again resorted to the marketplace buyer’s strategy to acquire Adducul from Ginebra through the usual conduit that effectively circumvented league rules without necessarily legally breaking them. The mockery was heightened when Ginebra wound up with an unknown point guard who decorated the bench—Paulo Hubalde.

Having been associated with the PBA in one way or another since its inception in 1975, we feel very strongly and even passionately about the league being used by a couple of individuals or teams as a business enterprise not to promote its products but to make money selling players. This doesn’t strengthen the competitive balance which should be the bedrock of the league but only abets the richer teams getting stronger and the poorer teams floundering. In more modern language, this whole episode sucks!

Panalo pala BGK sa Air21, 121 - 116. Buti nag-step up si Menk, 22 pts. Si Sunday malas ata pag Sunday, 6 pts lang? Matagal nang laging single digit ang production niya. Inaalat....

Sana nga manalo SM sa TnT. Para sa Wed., KO game with the Aces. Magandang laro yan.
