Still on Yeo - Villanueva "boxing match".

    Sanction poised on Villanueva, Yeo
    Malaya

MORE than 24 hours after figuring in another fight, Red Bull forward Enrico Villanueva and Coca-Cola rookie Joseph Yeo met at the PBA conference room yesterday, had a heart-to-heart talk, shook hands and said they are ready to face sanctions over the latest saga in their long-standing rift.

Pro league commissioner Noli Eala, who summoned the players, stressed he will not tolerate the latest fight between the two but withheld any sanction pending testimonies from people who witnessed the latest altercation between the two former college rivals who brawled at the Araneta Coliseum South Game last Sunday.

"They will not escape sanction but to me, more than the sanction, what’s more important is to find the root cause and put an end to it," said Eala. "A sanction will not solve the deeply-rooted issue between these two players. I was happy both responded positively and at the end, they both wanted to talk, just the two of them.

"I didn’t tell them what to do but they agreed to put things in the past. They made a commitment to co-exist harmoniously in the PBA," Eala added.

Yeo’s teammates, Mike Gavino, Allan Salangsang and Manny Ramos, also appeared before Eala yesterday to shed light on the fight.

After talking with Yeo, Villanueva approached Gavino and apologized, according to Eala. Gavino sustained a deep cut on his left eyebrow, hit by a wild blow while he was trying to separate the protagonists. Yeo sustained bruises on his face and back.

Eala said the incident was apparently sparked by mere miscommunication.

Shortly after the match between Red Bull and Coca-Cola last Sunday, won by the Barakos 95-67, Villanueva reportedly thought Yeo was looking for a fight when the latter told him: "Ano ang nginingiti-ngiti mo diyan? Tapusin na natin ito dito."

Yeo, however, told Eala he was merely looking to patch things up with Villanueva when he uttered that remark that apparently was misinterpreted by the burly 6-foot-6 slotman.
Yeo bloodied Villanueva’s nose during a La Salle-Ateneo exhibition game in December 2005 and the latter retaliated by ramming his shoulder at the 6-foot-1 guard’s chest in an incident that was quickly quelled during a pre-season game last March.

While awaiting sanction, Eala said Villanueva will be able to play as Red Bull tangles with Purefoods in a crucial game today in the Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The two teams fight for solo second place behind idle leader Sta. Lucia Realty following the opener between Air21 and Welcoat. Air21 won over Welcoat 110-94 the first time they met last Oct. 22
