BARANGAY GINEBRA has become even more daunting on paper.

Flaunting a frontline unmatched in terms of depth, the Kings completed the missing piece in their backcourt by snatching Johnny Abarrientos from the unrestricted free-agent list yesterday.

The restriction for the Kings to acquire the prized playmaker was lifted before sunset after no other team outside of the San Miguel Corp.-owned ballclubs dangled an offer to secure the rights on the 1996 PBA MVP.

Under league rules, teams interested on Abarrientos have five working days which started Wednesday last week to negotiate with the veteran point guard. The grace period lapsed yesterday afternoon.

“If there are no takers, we’ll definitely take him (Abarrrientos) in,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

Abarrientos was included in the unrestricted free-agency list last week when the Coca-Cola Tigers released the 14-year veteran more than two weeks before the expiration of his contract Sept. 30.

The Kings are in dire need of a reliable point guard after Jayjay Helterbrand and backup Egay Echavez got sidelined by injuries. Helterbrand has again hurt his flexor muscle on the right hip during practice.

But should the 6-foot Helterbrand show up in game shape in the opening of the PBA’s 32nd season on Oct. 1, Abarrientos will still come in handy for Uichico and the Gin Kings.

“He’s a steady backup to Jayjay and Johnny’s experience and smartness will give us the stability that we need,” said Uichico.

He’ll team up with Mark Caguioa, Rodney Santos and Mark Macapagal in the backcourt.

PBA and filipino basketball fans don't deserve this kind of player...akala ko ba pro pinoy itong si buddy encarnado? dapat yun spot niya ibigay na lang sa local plasana i freeze na lang nila si local player tapos i freeze nila si cabagnot until mag expire ang contract w/o pay tutal breach of contract yun ginawa niya,
