Cabagnot mom pleads for prodigal guard

STA. LUCIA REALTY is in a dilemma on whether to give Alex Cabagnot another chance or dump the delinquent point guard for good.

Cabagnot is repentant for his misdeeds after the sophomore playmaker from the University of Hawaii-Hilo abandoned the Realtors without a word two months ago.

Team sources said the Sta. Lucia management has already learned to move on without Cabagnot. The team is now contemplating on whether to take its prodigal guard back or penalize him harshly.

Aside from a P20,000 fine awaiting Cabagnot for playing two games in the Las Vegas Summer League without Sta. Lucia’s consent, team governor Buddy Encarnado had vowed to seek a lifetime ban from the league.

“Boss Buddy is still undecided on what to do with Cabagnot,” said a team insider who declined to be identified.

“He (Encarnado) understands that Cabagnot was influenced by his peers. But at the same time, he wants to make this player an example that you cannot just abandon your team and return if you feel like it.”

Encarnado and team manager Ariel Magno couldn’t be reached for comment but another source said Cabagnot’s mother, Jo Del Rosario, talked to Encarnado over the phone and pleaded that his son be given another chance.

Should the Realtors reinstate Cabagnot, the team will have a surplus of players.

According to the same source, team management will sit down with Cabagnot soon after his arrival from the United States.

“Boss Buddy will decide after their heart-to-heart talk,” said the source. “Never in his 24 years with basketball has he put a player down. But a lesson must be taught and it will be on his mind when he talks with Cabagnot.”

Cabagnot left for the US in a huff after the Realtors got booted out in the wild-card phase of the season-ending Philippine Cup.

It was actually the second time that Cabagnot had gone AWOL. After being picked second overall in the 2005 draft by the Realtors, Cabagnot left the country, purportedly to pursue his studies.

It turned out Cabagnot was at a loss on what kind of contract he would get from the Realtors.

As a result of his latest boo-boo, Cabagnot’s three-year contract with the Realtors is now bound to be restructured if player and team settle their differences.

Cabagnot is supposed to receive P225,000 a month in his second year and P337,500 in the last year of the pact after the Realtors gave him the maximum salary for a rookie last year.

man, how stupid can one get.

    The Philippine Star 09/20/2006
