Taulava Remains a Phone Pal for P8.4M

ASI TAULAVA, honored as the 2003 most valuable player after spearheading Talk ‘N Text to its first ever Philippine Basketball Association championship, has inked a fresh two-year deal with the Phone Pals worth P8.4 million.

The most dominant big man in the league the past five seasons will receive the maximum allowable monthly take of P350,000 outside of added perks and bonuses, according to an Inquirer source yesterday. The Phone Pals have earlier retained the services of playmaker Donbel Belano as backup for Jimmy Alapag in the next three seasons.

On his eighth season with the Phone Pals, the 6-foot-9 Taulava still has the spunk to help the Phone Pals duplicate the All-Filipino crown they captured in 2003, the first for the Manny V. Pangilinan-owned ballclub since joining the league in 1996.

The 33-year-old Taulava is the league’s scoring leader since 2001, averaging 20.2 points per game before Barangay Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa outshot him last season. Nonetheless, Taulava is still the king of the boards after topping the rebounding department during the 2005 season for the fourth time in five years.

The hulking Fil-Tongan grabbed an average of 13 rebounds in 41 games last season, including a 5.3 rpg off the offensive boards.

Taulava’s scoring, however, dipped last year to only 14.9 points in 41 outings.

Sta. Lucia Realty pick: Is it Williams or Santos?

    08/03/2006

It’s a toss-up between Kelly Williams and Arwind Santos as top pick in coming Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) draft while Sta. Lucia Realty eyes a lifetime ban and a suit against Alex Cabagnot should the pointguard disregard the Realtors’ order to return immediately.

Williams, a product of Oakland University and fixture in the national team, was said to have complied with the league’s requirement for a Department of Justice certification while two others, Joe Devance and Rob Reyes, did not, last Monday.

A total of 53 rookie hopefuls were divided into five teams to compete in the pre-draft rookie camp starting Aug. 7 Saturday at the PhilSports Arena.

Should Sta. Lucia Realty opt for a homegrown talent such as Santos, Williams could end up with Air21 or San Miguel Beer, which pick second and third, respectively.

Air21 earlier also declared its interest on Santos while San Miguel seems deadset on picking former Ateneo guard LA Tenorio.

In another development, SLR official Buddy Encarnado yesterday said he has sent a copy of their e-mail to Cabagnot’s father, Alex Sr., and to Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Noli Eala recently.

“This letter stated that we want him (Cabagnot) to be back immediately. But so far, we haven’t heard from him,” Encarnado said during an interview with the Tribune.

Cabagnot has not been heard from since the end of the Realtors’ stint in the Philippine Cup and was indefinitely suspended by the Realtors’ management last Tuesday when he failed to a memo after the 72-hour deadline.

Cabagnot was last seen playing in the LA Summer League, which was participated in PBA team Talk ‘n Text.

“There was violation from his part since he played there without asking for the mother team’s permission,” Encarnado said, “No less that PBA chairman Ricky Vargas saw him there.”

Cabagnot, No. 2 pick in the 2005-2006 draft, is into the second year of a three-year pact which guaranteed his P150,000 a month in the first year, P225,000 a month in the second year and P337,500 a monthly on the third and final year.

“We have already suspended him and and it’s possible that we might ask for a lifetime ban and that is without prejudice to case,” Encarnado explained.

He revealed the team also turned down an offer from another PBA team, which baited a center for Cabagnot. Another source said it was Ginebra which dangled Romel Adducul for Cabagnot.

    ================================================== =

Tama ba intindi ko rito, Adducul in exchange for Cabagnot?

Diyos ko Ginebra! Huwag na kayong kumuha pa ng sakit sa ulo!

    SMC-PILIPINAS LOSES COACH, GAME
Pinoys succumb to spotty officiating, coach’s ejection
    Thursday, 03 August 2006

DOHA, Qatar – The night started out perfectly for SMC-Pilipinas, but didn’t quite have the proper ending.

The Filipinos jumped the gun on Qatar, but couldn’t get over the bum calls and the ejection of head coach Chot Reyes, allowing the hosts to pull off a 77-58 win Wednesday in the Al-Emadi International Basketball Championship here.

The loss disappointed the Filipinos who filled the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Hall to the rafters to watch the Nationals’ debut in the four-nation tourney. The fans, mostly OFWs and their families, nonetheless had a grand time cheering SMC-Pilipinas on and posing for pictures with the players after the game.

Willie Miller took control from the opening tap, mocking the bigger Qataris’ defense and presiding over an 11-5 start that had the crowd in a total frenzy.

But Qatar, getting its big men to work inside after Kerby Raymundo picked up his second foul, clawed its way back.

With prospective first round draftees LA Tenorio and Joseph Yeo on the floor, SMC-Pilipinas fell into a maze of errors on consecutive offensives, and Qatar lost no time in unleashing a crippling 12-1 run that transformed a 28-28 standoff to a 40-29 bulge at the half.

Aided by calls and non-calls that went their way, the hosts built a 15-point lead at 44-29. But the Filipinos bucked the spotty officiating, cutting the deficit to 37-48 and appeared headed for a run until a Greek referee slapped a technical foul on Reyes.

Reyes stormed to the hardcourt to approach the referee and ask why he was given a technical for simply jumping and walking to the end of the bench, earning for himself a second technical and an early ticket to the showers.

Qatar converted the four free throws awarded for the two technical fouls and it was all downhill for the Filipinos from that point on.

“I take full responsibility for what happened. I shouldn’t have done that. Pero grabe naman talaga. Nakita naman ng mga tao yun,” said Reyes. “I just wish we could play them again. This is a team we can really beat.”

After the game, Reyes went over to the same Greek referee to ask why he was given the first technical. An argument ensued, with the referee telling Reyes he can’t react and jump because “what are you, an animal?”

To compound the Nationals’ woes, the coaster assigned to the team was given to the Qatar squad. Instead, a couple of dilapidated vans were dispatched. Rather than use them, however, the Filipinos opted to ride with Filipino fans on the way to Central Café where vice consul Jabbar Adiong hosted dinner for the team

Part of the game talaga yang poor officiating, bum calls by referees sa international tournaments. Pero kung malakas sana yung team natin, baka tinambakan ng Pinoy ang Qatar sa umpisa pa lang.

Padala ka ba naman ng "ragtag" team eh.
