San Miguel Beer’s long wait is over, Alaska’s just got stretched even more.

The Beermen gutted out a 66-62 win over the Aces Wednesday night to break out of almost a month-long slump in the San Mig Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

“Wins are hard to come by for San Miguel Beer right now,” admitted SMB coach Jong Uichico of the triumph that snapped their four-game losing streak and fortuitously came just before the All-Stars break.

“It’s nice to end up winning before sa break na ito because we can work on some things that we need to really work on.”

Alaska’s own downward spiral is now pegged at five straight games and it was all due to the inability of the Aces to match the Beermen’s intensity in rebounding, defense and hitting the shots that mattered most in the endgame.

It was Dorian Pena who bailed SMB out of another poor shooting night, coming up with the crucial points and big rebounds to finish with team-highs of 15 points and 14 boards, nine of them offensive.

Alaska’s Jeffrey Cariaso had a game-high 17 points and Reynel Hugnatan 12 points, but even those could not offset the dismal seven points by Tee McClary, who was hobbled when he re-injured his brittle right ankle in the first half.

In contrast, SMB import Kwan Johnson lit up in the most crucial stages, bucking a two-point first half to finish with 11 points and eight rebounds to go with three assists and as many steals.

Also taking their big tolls on the Aces were the fouling out of Don Carlos Allado with still 6:40 left in the game, the seven-minute benching of McClary after he committed his fifth foul at the 10:30 mark of the fourth quarter and the ejection of coach Tim Cone after his second technical with still 1:01 left in the game.

In the end, San Miguel finished with a field shooting percentage of only 31.6 percent (25-of-79) while Alaska shot just slightly better at 37.7 percent (23-of-61). The Aces also failed to score in the final two minutes.

Pena’s two follow-ups and basket enabled SMB to charge from a 63-62 count and into a 66-62 lead, his last offensive rebound seemingly coming over the back of Hugnatan that caused Cone to vehemently protest and draw his second “T.”

The Aces also failed to fully pounce on the opportunity when the Beermen missed their first 12 shots from the field in the third period, managing to increase a hairline 28-27 edge to just 34-28.

When the Beermen managed to find some shooting touch, they went on to sink six of their last 10 shots and post a 49-47 lead into the final period.

It was a low-scoring game from the get-go and at the shorter end of it was SMB, which went eerily dry for almost a four-minute span in the second quarter after taking a 25-22 lead. (NCo)

(ARCHIVED)
