Sta. Lucia tries to finish off Purefoods
    By Musong R. Castillo

MANILA, Philippines -- The mouthful should come if Boyet Fernandez and his Sta. Lucia Realtors finish the job Wednesday.

The Sta. Lucia coach has so far chosen his words well up to this point, keeping mum on any predictions as Sta. Lucia tries to finish off Purefoods in Game 6 of the Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday.

In a series where memorable battles have been fought off the court as much as off it, the Realtors hope to seize the moment and add a page to its modes franchise history: A first-ever all-Filipino crown.

Sta. Lucia’s mission starts at 7 p.m. against a Purefoods squad that is expected to be pumped up by the return of James Yap. The Giants are expected to lay everything on the line to stretch the series into a decider and Yap will lead that crusade.

“Unless the commissioner finds another infraction to slap on James and suspends him again, he will be playing,” Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio mockingly said after losing, 88-76, and yielding a crucial 3-2 lead to Sta. Lucia.

Fernandez, who had spoken boldly in his semifinal series against Alaska, going as far as to predict a Realtors victory after taking a similar 3-2 lead.

But so far in the title series, he has resorted to such safe remarks as “no comment” and has even told scribes that he expects a Purefoods fightback.

“Purefoods is a very strong team with a rich tradition,” the Bacolod native, also a licensed nurse, said on Sunday. “But we will be ready for them. We will prepare for all the adjustments that they will make.”

The main difference between Wednesday night’s game and Game 5 that the Realtors have to prepare for is the return of Yap.

Gregorio is expected to ride the 2006 MVP all the way to a knockout match. The Purefoods mentor, however, is expected to check Yap’s morale, which has been on a low since being suspended for smacking Sta. Lucia’s Joseph Yeo in the nose.

“He (Yap) told me over the phone that he has lost passion for the game, especially after how he was treated by the commissioner,” Gregorio said. “But I told him that games are won on the basketball court.

“And that is where he needs to make his statement.”

Yap’s return automatically injects about 27 points to a Purefoods offense that struggled to find the basket in Game 5. The Realtors, no longer needing to chase down Yap all over the court, found it easy to clamp down on Kerby Raymundo in that decisive encounter.

Raymundo, who finished third behind Realtor Kelly Williams in the Player of the Conference race, did score 20 points, but was held scoreless in the middle two quarters when the Realtors seized control.

The first five games of the series have been rough, to say the least, and it would be interesting to see how the Realtors play their rugged brand of defense when they try to close out this experience Purefoods crew.

Williams, who will undoubtedly win the Finals MVP if the Realtors do go all the way, will again be the man to stop for Gregorio.

The 6-foot-7 Detroit native scored 20 points and hauled down 16 boards in the Sunday win.

‘The Mailman’ courted to deliver for Red Bull
    spacer

Believe it or not, Red Bull is negotiating to hire NBA great and former Utah Jazz star as one of its imports in the PBA Fiesta Cup next month.

Known as "The Mailman" for his ability to deliver for his team, Malone has been retired for several years and is turning 45 on July 27.

This move is apparently not a publicity stunt because Tony Chua, Red Bull’s representative said yesterday that negotiations are currently underway to lure Malone who retired as one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players.

Malone, whose teamup with guard John Stockton is one of the most enduring two-man partnership in NBA history, helped the Jazz to reach the NBA Finals twice and losing on both occasions to the Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan.

"We actually have three options but Karl Malone is our priority," Chua told the Bulletin. "We’re still awaiting his decision. I think it will be good not only for our team but also for the league."

The Fiesta Cup, which begins Mar. 30, allows teams to get an import with unlimited height. Welcoat Paints and Coca-Cola are allowed to use two reinforcements, one with unlimited height and the other not taller than 6’1".

According to Chua, they’re waiting for Malone, whose wife is a Filipina, to decide until today.

Some insiders believe it is unlikely Malone will play again for two reasons. One is his age and second, the salary.

How can he accept a contract that pays less than ,000 a month in a place halfway around the globe, said one when told of Red Bull’s plan.

For him to do that, said another, he must really be crazy about basketball and he misses the game so much.

"Otherwise, this is all a publicity gimmick."

Chua did not say how much they are offering Malone to come out of retirement and neither did he say who was negotiating for Malone’s services.

Malone was chosen by the Utah Jazz in 1985 out of Louisiana Tech with the 13th overall pick in the NBA Rookie Draft. He played 18 seasons with Utah, which he powered to the NBA Finals twice, 1997 and 1998.

He last played for Los Angeles during the 2003-04 NBA season together with Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers lost to the Detroit Pistons in the 2004 Finals, with Malone missing Game 5 with a sprained right knee.
