LAS VEGAS—A rejuvenated Miguel Cotto completely dominated willing and wild slugger Ricardo Mayorga to score a TKO in the 12th and final round of their WBA junior middleweight title bout Sautrday night at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino.
Mayorga was stopped at the 53 second mark of the last round of a fight in which, on my scorecard he only lost a single round.
There was no shame in the effort by the 38 year old Nicaraguan's effort after three months of his typical prefight bravado.
There was no way that Mayorga, now 29-8-1, was going to KO the precision punching and excellent boxing machine that was Boricua Banger Cotto.
Cotto punctuated his superiority in graphic fashion, beginning the final round by dropping Mayorga to the seat of his pantalones with a compact, wicked left hook that looked like it came out of a how to box instructional video.
"I give credit to Cotto," Mayorga said in the ring after referee Robert Byrd halted it after Mayorga dropped his hands to indicate he did not want to or could not fight on to the finish.
A spokesman for Mayorga said the fighter may have dislocated his left thumb while throwing a frantic flurry.
"Cotto hits hard, he is a great champion and I whispered into his ear only to say I thank him for the opportunity... hurt my thumb and I wanted to continue. I did not want it to end like that but this may have been my last fight."
After 11 rounds, Cotto was ahead 107-102 according to all three judges, Chris Wilson of Arizona and Nevada veterans Duane Ford and Jerry Roth.
Cotto, whose record improved to 36-2 with 29 knockouts, probably put himself in line for two more big paydays with promoter Top Rank, perhaps a revenge bout against Mexican Antonio Margarito and then a second chance against boxing's real cash cow, Manny Pacquiao.
At age 30. and when some thought he was sliding in ability, Cotto came back with a performance which marked him as perhaps being only below Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. among the world's best 147 to 154 pounders.
Would Cotto do any better against Pacquiao, age 32, in a rematch? I kind of doubt that but doubting the fiber of Cotto, the ring record shows, is not a smart move.
In a real surprise on the undercard, Cotto victim and former WBA 154 pound champion and aspiring rabbi Yuri Foreman was a TKO 6 loser, quitting on his stool, against lightly regarded former sparmate Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak, a game Polish boxer fighting out of North Jersey.
Foreman, hit hard by a leg injury that cost him any chance to beat Cotto at Yankee Stadium and then the sudden death of his beloved manager, Murray Wilson, seemed to be going through the motions against an opponent he knew well, maybe too well.
To his credit, Foreman took nothing away from Wolak's big night and he will now have to check his head to see if his desire to be a world class fighter has evaporated.
Being a rabbi doesn't seem to be a bad alternative for the personable Foreman.
Foreman lived his dream to become a world champion and now the eager Wolak has also.
Wolak immediately called out for a fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
    Attendance was 7,247.
