For Malaysia, the "regional tournament" was the equivalent of the WC because even in their wildest dreams they could never win the WC right now, so the next best thing (realistically) they could win are regional competitions.

Malaysia weren't favorites to win the competition which makes the victory more sweet.

Malaysia had a relatively young squad.

Malaysia loves football which has made everybody (including the govt) ecstatic about the victory.
