    some folks feel IV might confuse fast lookers.

    Found it. Real reason is “symmetry”. There are exactly 14 Roman numerals on each side when IIII is used.

    in several articles in google, it is just one of at least four "reasons".
    tradition is indeed difficult to fathom, sometimes.
    but yes, your "symmetry" theory seems logical, just by looking at the face.
