    for emergencies maybe you can do this. actually just hook up an inverter to your car battery (which you already disconnected from the car before doing so). then power up low power devices like your celphone charger. run a ref or aircon? dumb move. these require more power than your car or battery can deliver properly.

    one reason not to do this (run your car as generator) is efficiency. basic thermodynamics. the ICE of an automobile is the worst equipment you can use as generator. better a dedicated generator. sayang fuel (maybe you've heard of the ill effects brought about by pollution?).

    Yup, if you know the rating of a certain equipment you can compute for it's current carrying capabilities. For example a 500-watt heater for a single phase system: first divide 500 watts by 0.8(the normal power factor here in the Philippines) the result is 625 VA(volt-ampere), then divide this by 220 volts which is around 2.84 amperes.
