Fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury, which emits UV radiation when it is electrically excited. This UV radiation then interacts with the chemicals on the inside of the bulb to generate light. Tube fluorescent bulbs have diffusers that filter the UV radiation. The new compact fluorescent light bulbs do not have these diffusers and hence people using CFL are exposed to UV radiation. UV radiation has been linked to skin cancer and various skin disorders. Those who have skin problems may be particularly sensitive to this radiation.

May alam ba kayo saan maganda bumili led lights?

First daw tayo in asia na i-ban cfl. Pang guiness book at ripleys talaga tayo.

In February 2008, president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo called for a ban of incandescent light bulbs by 2010 in favor of more energy-efficient fluorescent globes to help cut greenhouse gas emissions and household costs during her closing remarks at the Philippine Energy Summit. Once put in effect, the country will be the first in Asia to ban incandescent bulbs.

Public opposition
There is evidence of panic buying of incandescent bulbs ahead of the EU lightbulb ban. Many retailers in Britain, Poland, Austria, Germany and Hungary have reported , and in Germany, sales rose by up to 150% in 2009 in comparison to 2008. Two-thirds of Austrians surveyed stated they believe the phase-out to be "nonsensical", with 53.6% believing their health to be at risk of mercury poisoning.72% of Americans believe the government has no right to dictate which light bulb they may use. The Czech Republic President, Vaclav Klaus, urged people to stockpile enough incandescent bulbs to last their lifetime.

The phase out has been referred to as "Light bulb socialism". The overwhelming consumer preference for light bulbs in the EU is for incandescent bulbs, with many complaining of the ugliness and the cold, flat, unnatural, dull light emanating from CFLs.. Objection has also been raised to being forced to adopt CFLs

Museums and individuals have been stockpiling incandescent lightbulbs across Europe, owing to CFL's inferior colour representation. The European Association for the Co-ordination of Consumer Representation in Standardisation has called for a speedy reduction of the mercury levels contained within CFLs from the current 5mg limit to 1 mg. The European Consumers' Organization, BEUC, said that phasing out incandescent bulbs will be detrimental for people suffering light-related health issues, and called for the continued availability of incandescent bulbs:

"The EU Regulation falls short of the needs of some consumers who need to use the old-style light bulbs for health-related reasons such as light sensitivity. We call on the European Commission to take immediate measures to ensure that people who rely on incandescent light bulbs will be able to buy these bulbs until suitable alternative lighting technologies are available. There are also concerns about the risks to health from the high mercury content of the new bulbs."

A campaign group called SPECTRUM was formed by the charities Lupus UK, Eclipse Support Group, ES-UK, XP Support Group and The Skin Care Campaign as an 'alliance for light sensitivity' to oppose 'UK and EU plans to phase out incandescent lightbulbs'. Their campaign has been picked up and amplified by the British Association of Dermatologists, calling for access to incandescent light bulbs for those who are medically sensitive to CFLs and other non-incandescent bulbs, and the charity Migraine Action, stating that its members still suffer adverse effects from CFLs despite protestations from the light bulb industry.
In the United States, one opponent to banning the incandescent light bulb is the lighting designer Howard Brandston, a fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. He has attempted to raise awareness of what he believes are negative effects of the phase out.

If you are complaining about the light, you could opt for the "warm" version of the CFL bulbs where the light is slightly yellow similar to incandescent bulbs. This is what I use for my bedroom lighting while the other rooms use the normal white CFL lights.

If you are concerned about UV radiation, just install the CFL bulbs in a housing with a plastic diffuser. What is so hard about that?

CFL bulbs do have benefits in cutting down the amount of power needed by a fraction as compared to incandescent bulbs.

Paki-explain bakit yung tube fluorescent may diffuser pero yung cfl wala?

Housing with a plastic diffuser?

The thing is... we're already exposed to a lot of UV radiation from regular flourescents... and studies show that exposure is harmful if you're only a half-foot away from a CFL. A ceiling CFL fixture won't significantly increase your UV radiation exposure (unless you're a shut-in who doesn't get any sunlight at all). Besides, as GH says, get one with an enclosure and your risks go way, waaaay down.

Only danger is if you use CFLs in reading lights... and they make terrible reading lights... too much flicker and too bright... halogen and incandescents are still best for these.

Haven't seen a home LED fixture worth it, yet... the bluish light is harsher than CFLs (which are available in daylight colors) and they're not bright enough yet. Maybe in a few years... we're just starting to get LED flashlights that can perform at par with incandescent flashlights.

As for mercury... given that our landfills are stuffed with broken long-tube flourescents... does anybody in the government really care?

Depends on the design requirements for the CFL lighting fixture. The ones I have in my home all have light diffusers. Other designs do not have a light diffuser because they rely more on the reflector of the housing to spread the light more evenly.

One thing about diffusers, they tend to reduce the total amount of light from the source. This is why some prefer to use lighting fixtures without diffusers.

Housing with a plastic diffuser?
The difference: (using fluorescent tube housing as example)

Without plastic defuser:

I have seen some being sold but pricy. P500 for a single E27-type bulb that has the same brightness as a 20 watt incandescent. Consumes 1.7 watts of power.

Sold at some branches of ACE hardware. Landlite brand.

And then there is the pair of 1 watt LED E27 bulbs I bought in Hong Kong a couple of years ago. Produces about 10 watts incandescent equivalent of light but in warm yellow light. Perfect for my bedroom's side table lamps. Price then was just under P150 each.

You can buy CFLs and LED lighting that emit "warm-white" light or light that is yellowish, similar to what typical incandescent bulbs emit. These are softer on the eyes than the pure white of CFLs/LEDs.

All our home lighting is CFLs. And it's all yellow. It's pretty okay for ceiling fixtures, since we use multiple bulbs... but there's a noticeable buzzing if you're using a single fixture (as with a reading light). But these CFLs are easier on the eyes than naked flourescent tubes.

I haven't noticed anything similar with LEDs though... I sometimes read with an LED flashlight. Haven't seen the yellow ones... will be sure to look them up.

Still, the quality of the light from CFLs (and I've tested all colors) pales in comparison to good halogens and incandescents. It's utterly stupid to completely ban these lights when they have their uses. We have halogens that we use only for special occassions (display lights) and for reading lights, but 99% of the time, we use CFLs.

i use mainly cfl around the house from 8w=40w to 15w=75w either yellow or warm white. honestly, i hated it- no comparison with ordinary bulbs/tube re lighting/area and sometimes life cycle. it's so darn dark especially when it is inside a housing. take it from me i work in a dark room.
i think cfl should be relegated to table lamps and wall fixtures especially if your ceiling is 10 ft high or higher. although i purchase a whole set of cfl i've always kept the dining and kitchen lighted by bright fluorescent tubes. i love to cook and feast. i'm also using halogen for desk lamps because i need to. mercury in cfl would be dangerous if the bulb is not handled/ disposed properly, but very safe to use so far for the past five years, and carries low electricity bills to boot. gov't shouldn't ban old lamps outright but regulate it until matters are resolved and improvements are implemented on cfls.

Salamat ghosthunter, niky and helios.
