Spikes are very different from voltage fluctuations. Tens of kilovolts in microseconds means that no electro-mechanical AVR is fast enough and no electronic AVR is rated high enough to cope with it.

What's needed against spikes is a spike filter, which may or may not be included in an AVR or multi-outlet power strip. You only need MOV's (metal oxide varistors) connected between the line/s and ground. At normal voltages the MOV acts like an open circuit. Above the clamping voltage, it acts like a short, shunting the spike to ground.

My first Sony product was a hand-me-down cassette deck. I've replaced the drive belts a few times, and the tape head twice. The casing has seen better days, and the sound quality's crap compared to newer ones. After all, it's about 34 years old by now.

Bro.,- it is not enough that you just turn off the set kahit na sabihin pa nating "pinipindot sa tv mismo".... You need to pull out the plug from the AC outlet (Or if you don't want to do it, buy an extension cord with a switch, and switch it off). Because if you keep it plugged, the appliance's power supply is still exposed, typically through electrical (magnetic) hysteresis....

Ask the shops that repair appliances and I'd bet the technician will tell you that the most common reason why the power supply gets busted(based on their experience) is that the appliance is plugged-in almost all of the time.

depende rin yan siguro... pag natiyambahan mo nga yung spike malamang sasabog talaga yan...

pero ako, loyal pa rin ako sa Sony in terms of Audio Video electronics... yung Sony Wega ko... 1999 pa yun... until now wala pa ring sira, yung Hi-Fi Stereo ko kasabay lang nung tv ko and until now... parang yung volume control lang sira kaya sa remote na lang ginagamit ko... papalinisan lang daw yun... bumili din ako ng bagong hi-fi stereo ng sony na may sub-woofer na... at yun malakas pa rin...may dvd is also a sony... ayos pa rin hanggang ngayon...

pero lately, di sony ang binili ko sa home theater in a box kasi mahal ang sony kaya JVC na lang binili ko...

Just a question for the TS. When you said halos kasabay masira yung DVD and TV, how long was the difference na masira sila? Was it days? hours? weeks?

Kasi kung saglit lang ang pagitan na nasira sila, it might really suggest to have something to do with your household electric current, possibly a power spike nga, as most of the posters have mentioned.

just adding my 2 cents worth...

i agree ... tsambahan lang talaga ang failure

it used to be that Sony is the best in TV due to their Trinitron technology but things have changed since 1996 when their patent expired ... other brands have caught up with them and now Samsung leads in TV sales

usually power supply nga ang problema sa mga units ngayon kasi yun nga ang bugbog sa mga electrical abnormalities pero madalas naman matibay ang gawa ng mga ito kahit na always plugged ang tv ... although preferred ko rin yung merong mechanical push-button on-off switch to completely remove power to the tv (many modern tv's do not have this feature anymore)

dati puro Sony ang TV namin, then we shifted to JVC, and now Samsung ang latest TV namin kasi lower cost, good picture quality na rin, at wala pa naman problema after 1 yr ... all are conventional crt's ... and yes, SONY Service is one reason I now try to avoid Sony ... I had better experience with JVC Service, fast and reasonable cost.

Careful in purchasing those Sony Digital Cameras as well.
I just brought my Sony camera to the Sony Center for
repairs. Lima (5) kaming nakapila doon, lahat kami yung Cybershot digicam
ang ipapagawa. And all of them are pretty recent models.
