A strong gust of wind uprooted a tree and an electric post which fell on a car cruising along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City at noon yesterday. No one was hurt in the incident.

Described as a “mini ipo-ipo (tornado)” by residents, the gust of wind knocked down a Manila Electric Company post at the Commission on Audit U-turn slot, and an ipil-ipil tree some 10 meters away.

The tree then fell on the hood of a Toyota Camry (plate number XKZ 990) which was passing on the northbound lane.

The impact left a dent on the left side of the hood, according to PO3 Venus Ormita of Quezon City Traffic Sector 5. Witnesses said the impact was weak because the descent of the post was gradual.

The driver of the car, a man who was in his early to mid-30s, did not leave his name with investigators, and was in a hurry to leave the scene.

Traffic police called in Meralco personnel to remove the light post which blocked several lanes of the busy highway, Ormita said.

The electric wires, curiously enough, were gone by the time the Meralco personnel appeared on the scene, Ormita said. She added that they were probably taken away by persons who sell the wires to junk shops.

Barangay officials, on the other hand, helped push the fallen tree away from the road, Ormita said.
