it is possible that the palmrest cable came loose already, causing the problem (sometimes). try to go to support.dell.com, look for the teardown guide for your system, and take out the keyboard and its cable.

if no-go, the entire palmrest might need to be replaced since the touchpad is integrated to it and there's no separate part number for the touchpad.

OK Nugundam93 thanks, will give it a go. Anyway, the pointer drifting
seems to have stopped and medyo normal na siya the past few days.

Medyo sinusumpong lang siguro pag napapalakas yung tapik ko sa touchpad.

I'm making a mental note not to tap the touchpad and click instead the
    assigned buttons.

I never use a notebook pc unless I place it on a table. The touchpads are fine. But I prefer a cordless mouse. I also carry along a compact cordless keyboard. So, I don't use the notebook keyboard either. Actually, my laptop backpack is big enough to stuff in a fullsize (Micro Innovations) cordless keyboard and mouse set.

There's nothing I do that makes me so busy that I have to set the notebook on my lap and use the touchpad.
