Hayaan na lang kasi ng administration yan. Kung hindi naman totoo, it will just die a natural death.

MALACAÑANG may not find the ring tones funny, but tens of thousands of Filipinos are downloading onto their computers and mobile phones President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's alleged "Hello Garci" sound clips.

Demand for the ring tones was so big that txtpower.org, the website of the mobile subscribers group TXTPower, crashed within one hour of uploading two "Hello Garci" sound files at around noon on Friday, TXTPower convenor Anthony Cruz said yesterday.

"The sheer volume of those who logged onto our website and those who downloaded the files caused our website to crash. Our bandwidth is just 100 megabytes and it simply cannot cope with the hits and the download activity," Cruz told the Inquirer.

Cruz said Inq7.net's breaking story on the free "Hello Garci" downloads on txtpower.org -- a news account that came online within an hour of uploading by TXTPower of the sound files at the group's site -- may be credited for the quick response of Internet users.

[The Inq7 breaking story came from the Inquirer.]

"It's a good thing there were groups who came to our rescue and offered their sites as mirror sites for downloading (the files containing excerpts of the alleged conversations between Ms Arroyo and Election Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano about rigging the presidential election in her favor)," Cruz said.

Within the first 24 hours of having uploaded the sound files on Friday, Cruz said txtpower.org received more than 48,000 hits.

He said there was even a time over the weekend -- at 6 a.m. on Saturday -- when almost 8,000 users logged onto the site.

"That was the time when the Inquirer hit the streets in the morning," Cruz said.

As of noon yesterday, there were already a total of more than 72,000 hits on txtpower.org.

    Internet cafés

Before uploading the "Hello Garci" files, visitors of txtpower.org over the past three months did not even reach a thousand.

Asked if public interest in the ring tones had plateaued after the first 48 hours of the uploading, Cruz said it had not.

"Most Internet users get their access from either (Internet) cafés or the offices. We expect more to visit the site when work resumes (today)," Cruz said. Not many people have computers at home, much less Internet access, according to the TXTPower convenor.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said over the weekend that Malacañang was not taking lightly the text jokes about the alleged conversations between Ms Arroyo and Garcillano and the alleged involvement of the President's loved ones in jueteng.

With 120 million to 150 million text messages crossing mobile phone networks daily, the Philippines has been dubbed the texting capital of the world.

Cruz said Ms Arroyo only had herself to blame for the texters' revolt against her alleged involvement in electoral fraud. "She just won't admit it despite having been found out."

    More jokes coming

Cruz said more anti-Arroyo and anticorruption jokes were coming. "We expect to post the first 50 text jokes by 1 a.m., June 20, so media and the public could spread and broadcast them," he said.

The stunt is meant to force Ms Arroyo to "finally react [to] the tape issue."

Malacañang has denied any wrongdoing, but Ms Arroyo has not personally denied she was the person on the tape. The whereabouts of Garcillano are not known.

Activists used text messages in 2001 to mobilize huge crowds that eventually culminated in the ouster of then President Joseph Estrada. Estrada, who was succeeded by then Vice President Arroyo, is in detention while being tried for alleged massive corruption.

Aside from ring tones and text jokes, TXTPower said protest photos and artwork would soon be posted on its website.

Sites helping out txtpower.org include Indymedia QC, Yugatech, Pinoyblog, Ploghost, and Gazette Philippines.
