In business point of view, using some illegal methods is considered as cheating. But for personal use it is debatable.

September 19th, 2005 02:41 PM #123When we register our XP, we make a toll-free call to M$. Given the CD key and the caller's country of origin, that should solve the tactic of some tourists buying s/w here and bringing it back home, diba?
Buti lang I bought XP when its just below 3K....actually its an upgrade version, needing Win98/95 CD if you have to reinstall again.

I have read too many forums about this already about users who were so
helpless at first, seeking advice on how licenses works and where to get it,
then after buying they instantly change as if they never used any pirated
copy all their life. The only difference between an orig user and a pirated
user is time. Those who bought early or who got scared early vs. those
who will buy or will get scared in the next days to come.
All of us are products of unlicensed software, in one way or another, whether in school, office or home. If this aint true, then where did the US
get the figures of 90% piracy rate in the Phils in the late 90's.

I know that the law is on BSA'a side, and I am not arguing the legality of it. But I just wonder. Kaya ba ng BSA gawin yang raid sa China, Malaysia, or Indonesia? Ang sigurado ako, Pilipinas lang ang pwedeng i-bully ng large software developers using our very own NBI and local authorities. Wala kasi tayong pang-leverage eh. China is both a military and a trade giant. Too much is at stake there. Malaysia and Indonesia are Muslim nations- that's leverage enough. Philippines?
Mga 'tol. Bigay nyo nalang kay Bill Gates yung para sa kanya, hehehe. Ganyan lang talaga ang buhay.

If you will notice it, most everyday Filipinos are NUMB about software piracy.... meaning "most" people do not really care whether their neighbors are using counterfeit Windows XP or counterfeit video games in their homes. This is because they are not really affected whether a neighbor uses counterfeit or licensed software. So for practical purposes, the reaction cannot be compared if say, you discovered your neighbor has a jumper wire and pilfering electricity and he has his aircon turned on 24 hours a day.
Most people who support this software crackdown are those people engaged in software business like internet rental shops and legitimate software resellers. Again, as posted by someone earlier, it is cheating. So they are outraged by someone who is cheating their profits. That's an understandable outrage. And I symphatize with them.
But like anyone else in the private home sector (except for the truly-law abiding ones who are willing to cast the first stone), I don't give an etchas about buying pirated Windows XP!

I look at it in a different light naman kasi. some here accuse other businesses of making money out of pirated software.
Aren't we all?
If for instance, you want to get hired on a job and 1 of the requirements is to be a highly-skilled IT practicioner. what would most people do? They buy bootleg copies coz that's all they can afford (they're jobless). Install it at home and study it.
then they improve their skills, get hired and earn money. same thing din. you made money out of unlicensed software.
that's why I cant agree to seung's posts ridiculing/attacking those who still use pirated software.
furthermore, if seung has a business (I think he has coz he is particularly zoomed
in on this so-called lan shop business), he should be thankful bec. he need not to spend nor to train his newly-hired pinoy employees anymore on software. Some companies spend millions just to train their new emps on proprietary software.

As for the registration, you can also do it via internet. May parang "Activate Windows" tapos if you have an internet connection, i-veverify nalang niya through there then you're done.
EDIT: What I really find surprising about this whole anti-piracy operation was that it involves HOME USERS (when nakastate lang sa mga dyaryo ay huhulihin lang nila yung mga Business operators o mga for "corporate use").
They never mentioned in the newspapers nor even at BSA Philippines' homepage that home users will be included in the raids.
Even if the unit I'm using has original Win XP Pro OS, my parents nor anyone in the house would allow these operatives to do a search without a Formal Search Warrant.
Anyways, meron na bang bagong balita/kaganapan ng mga raids sa mga home users?Last edited by Blackraven; September 19th, 2005 at 06:36 PM.

hmmm, could this just be a marketing ploy for bsa members (microsoft, et al?)
why did i say so?
a) i am from the I.T. industry, have lots of connections within the industry, bakit wala pa akong nababalitaang corporate users na na-raid?
b) september to december, is the last quarter for marketing ng microsoft. dun sila hahataw ng quota.
c) syempre, yung mga companies na natatakot, bibili, even though hindi sila tawagan ng mga microsoft (et al) marketing reps, sila na mismo lalapit sa mga software companies na to?
d) i would be agreeing with the comments of some people here na if BSA/NBI and the rest of the law enforcement agencies are really serious in curbing up counterfeiting or piracy, they should have made moves to adjust or lower down the prices of these software for commercial use. so as if, they are really aware that the cause of piracy is due to the high cost of these software.
e) on the law enforcement agencies, magkano kaya binibigay ng mga software companies na to sa kanila? kanino yan napupunta? the reason i am saying this is that i once talked to a BSA lawyer. ang laki raw talaga ng ikutan ng pera dito.
imho lang... i am not flaming....
