some things to consider:
- plasma or LCD? Generally these days LCD is the choice.
- color quality. Check the color richness and the blackness of the blacks. Cheaper screens tend to have dull colors and greys for blacks.
- size (too big or too small for the room intended)
- 720 or 1080? smaller screens (below thirty inches) would be fine with 720 while bigger screens will benefit from 1080 resolution.
- number of video/data ports at the back (and front). You will want to be able to plug in all your gear and maybe a spare port or two for future additions.
- internet ready? Some screens have built-in systems to view internet content
- sound quality. You may or may not be planning for a 3rd party audio system so check if the sound quality from the screen is good enough for you.
- 3D ready or capable? At this point, you can ignore this unless you want to be one of the early adopters of this kind of system. Downside, 3D movies for the home are still few.
- PiP or Picture in Picture. Lets you monitor one or more channels (as a small picture) while watching something else as the big screen. Some have or don't have this feature. Not a deal breaker in more cases but a nice feature to have.
