Shell Eco-marathon Asia closes Roxas Blvd in the name of fuel efficiency

If you didn't know that the Shell Eco-marathon Asia is turning Luneta Park into a gigantic street circuit, well you do now. But what you should also know is that they're shutting down a portion of Roxas Boulevard for 11 days this February 2014.
The 2014 Shell Eco-marathon Asia will use a stretch of Roxas Boulevard between T.M. Kalaw and P. Burgos as a race track, which when finished, should look something like the photo above. That also means the rest of us can't use it while all this happens. So if you don't want to get stuck in a traffic jam, better list down this rerouting scheme.

From February 2 to 5 and again on 10 to 12, the Northbound lane of Roxas Boulevard (heading to the Port Area) will be closed between 12:00 MN to 4:00 AM. To get around this, you'll have to turn right at T.M. Kalaw, then left to Maria Orosa, left again to P. Burgos (or via Intramuros), and finally right to Bonifacio Drive.

Then, from February 2 to 12, the Southbound lane (going to Pasay) will be TOTALLY CLOSED to any vehicular and foot traffic. That's 24 hours/day for 11 days straight. Ouch! As a quick fix, they'll reroute southbound traffic to make a left at P. Burgos, then turn right to Maria Orosa, right again to T.M. Kalaw, and take a left back to Roxas Boulevard.

If we must paint you a picture, just imagine the amount of traffic flow that goes through a major road such as Roxas Boulevard, then cut the number of lanes in half. This will not be pretty.

Avoid Roxas Boulevard. Avoid it if you can.

Isn't it ironic how an event that promotes fuel efficiency can cause a traffic jam? This makes us ask why the organizers chose such a venue when the Philippines has 2 perfectly working race tracks, both of which are only around 100 km away from Metro Manila.

FIA set to tweak nose regulations for 2015

Governing body the FIA is set to alter Formula 1's nose regulations ahead of the 2015 season. This year, teams have produced a variety of striking solutions to the safety-driven nose changes, prompting a largely negative response amongst fans and raising questions over the direction the sport is heading. However, FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting has suggested that this ruling could soon be changed. "We can ensure more symmetry by not only prescribing a maximum deviation but also prescribing a minimal one and by not only increasing the surfaces that matter for the height of the car," he told Auto Motor und Sport.

16 int’l drivers, 8 Nascar cars set to race in PH

Barely a year after Philippine motorsport got embroiled in a controversial Nascar event in the United States, a group of Filipino racing enthusiasts are hoping to erase that stigma by bringing Nascar here and creating an international race on home turf.

During the Feb. 13 contract signing and press launch of the Asian V8 Championships (AV8C) at Maxims Hotel in Pasay City attended by no less than Automobile Association Philippines chief Gus Lagman, the Department of Tourism-Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (DOT/Tieza) COO Mark Lapid, Philippine Formula Autosport Foundation Inc. (PFAFI) president and founder Tom Pastor, Resorts World president Stephen Riley, race car driver Enzo Pastor and PFAFI board member Ted Toleman, and hosted by media personality RJ Ledesma, it was made clear that the Philippines has been envisioned to become the main hub of late-model Nascar cars for testing, training and competition.

    Red Bull-Renault woes continue...

Sebastian Vettel caused a red flag. He stopped his RB10 on track and has done just 14 laps!

What's worse, they spent most of the day in the pits fixing the car before the run... so it's not like it went out unprepared... it simply gave out, despite the team's best efforts.

Impressively, Force India's fastest time on the day beat Red Bull's fastest race lap time of last year. Still four seconds off of the fastest qualifying time, but that's a good indication, especially since they were doing long runs rather than single flyers, which means he had more fuel in the car than you would have on a qualifying run.

It might be that turbocharged torque could make these cars faster on some tracks than last years' cars. Here's to hoping.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
