Schumacher in coma, 'critical' after France ski accident

LYON - Michael Schumacher, the retired seven-time Formula One champion, is in a coma and remains in a "critical" condition after striking his head in a ski accident in the French Alps on Sunday, the hospital treating him said.

The 44-year-old German was "suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation", the hospital in the southeast French city of Grenoble said in a brief statement.

"He remains in a critical condition."

Schumacher had been skiing off-piste in the upmarket Meribel resort, where he reportedly has a property, when he fell and hit his head on a rock.

He was airlifted to a local hospital, then, an hour later, to the better-equipped Grenoble facility. A specialist neurosurgeon from Paris was rushed in to oversee his treatment.

The director of the Meribel resort, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, had said just after the accident that Schumacher had been wearing a helmet and was "conscious but a little agitated", suggesting he had not received life-threatening injuries.

But when Schumacher then fell into coma, doctors realized the damage was worse than initially feared.

Two mountain police officers who gave first aid to Schumacher said he was suffering "severe cranial trauma" when they got to him and a helicopter was brought in to evacuate him within 10 minutes.

A renowned Paris neurosurgeon, doctor Gerard Saillant, arrived at the Grenoble hospital in a police car to help take charge of the famous patient.

The hospital statement was signed by the facility's neurosurgeon, the professor in charge of its anesthesia/revival unit, and the hospital's deputy director. It was issued jointly with the ex-racer's press team in Germany.

The next update on Schumacher's condition would be given at 1000 GMT on Monday, a hospital spokesman said. Police were stationed to guard the hospital's entrances.

Schumacher, who lives with his family in Switzerland, was on a private stay in Meribel, according to his spokeswoman. He was reportedly skiing with his 14-year-old son at the time of the accident.

He is to have his 45th birthday next Friday.

Lotus to replace reserve Valsecchi with youngster Sorensen

Lotus team looks to have made its choice of official reserve driver for the 2014 Formula 1 season.

It appears unlikely the Enstone based team will keep Davide Valsecchi on board, particularly after the Italian admitted that he was “angry” when bosses overlooked him as the surgery-bound Kimi Raikkonen’s replacement late last season.

“Perhaps I lack experience but what chance do you have to gain any?” he said at the time.

According to the Italiaracing publication, Lotus looks set to turn to the similarly Eric Boullier-managed, 23-year-old Danish driver Marco Sorensen for 2014.

He raced in Lotus’ black and gold colours in the Formula Renault 3.5 series last year, finishing seventh, and in September made his Formula 1 test debut in a two-year-old car at the Paul Ricard track. (GMM)

2014 Formula 1 cars to have anteater style nosecone

What 2014 Ferrari and F1 cars will look like? - YouTube

Front nose solutions for the 2014 regulations could leave Formula 1 cars resembling anteaters, claims authoritative magazine Autosprint.

The report published an image apparently originating from the mandatory FIA crash test undergone recently by Caterham’s new car.

It depicts an impression of the 2014 nose on the so-called ‘control plate’ after the impact, confirming some observers’ fears that the likely solutions are aesthetically questionable.

“Notice how the nose is considerably narrower (than in 2013), for aerodynamic reasons.

“When the noses could be higher, they could be wider as they channelled air under the chassis. But a wide nose would now be a disturbance to the air flow,” correspondent Alberto Antonini explained.

Antonini said that it is likely thatmost teams will adopt similar ‘anteater’-like solutions. Video animation by Giorgio Piola. (GMM)

Sorensen set for Lotus reserve role in wake of Saxo deal

Highly rated Marco Sorensen looks set to join Lotus as the Enstone based team’s new reserve driver.

It emerged recently that 2013 reserve Davide Valsecchi, admittedly “angry” with the decision to overlook him for Kimi Raikkonen’s race seat late last year, will probably not return in the role in 2014.

At the same time, it was reported that 23-year-old Dane Sorensen will almost certainly be Valsecchi’s successor.

He raced in Lotus’ black and gold colours in the Formula Renault 3.5 series last year, finishing seventh, and in September made his Formula 1 test debut in a two-year-old car at the Paul Ricard track.

Valsecchi met with Lotus’ departing chief executive Patrick Louis last week, and before the meeting speculated to Formula 1passion.it: “Maybe he wants to wish me a happy new year, or tell me that he is resigning, or that they have hired Sorensen.”

The latter is probably the truth. Lotus announced on Monday that it has signed online Danish investment bank Saxo Bank as a new sponsor.

The bank is perhaps best known for its title sponsorships at the highest level of professional cycling, including the current Tinkoff-Saxo team.

“Saxo Bank is excited to have the opportunity to diversify its sporting partnerships, which now forge close ties to two of the world’s most popular sports,” co-CEOs and founders Kim Fournais and Lars Seier Christensen said in a statement. (GMM)

Kobayashi is back in F1, but I'm not too optimistic if he'll ever score a point this year much less a podium finish...

Caterham announces new drivers for 'pivotal' year

Jan.21 (GMM) After a period of intense speculation, Caterham on Tuesday finally announced its all-new race lineup, thereby completing F1's field of 2014.
As expected, the Tony Fernandes-led team said returning Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi will be joined by Swedish rookie Marcus Ericsson.

Also as reported earlier, Dutchman Robin Frijns, who worked in a similar role at Sauber last year, will be a new Caterham reserve driver.

"The process may have taken longer than we'd have liked, but we didn't want or need to be rushed into such important decisions, and we have been in the happy position of having a wide range of drivers to choose from," said team boss Cyril Abiteboul.

Japanese Kobayashi, renowned for his adrenaline-fuelled driving style, thanked his fans who pledged money to help the popular 27-year-old return to F1 after losing his Sauber seat in 2012.

"I am very pleased that the money they raised not only helped me but will now go to helping Caterham progress this year," he said.

What is also clear, however, is that drivers with more lucrative backing were overlooked by Caterham.

"This wasn't about money," said team owner Fernandes. "Having him here is a good morale boost for the team."

Entrepreneur Fernandes, who also owns the Malaysian airline Air Asia, hinted that 2014 could be Caterham's last chance to score a point and move up the F1 grid after three years as a backmarker.

"There comes a point," he admitted to Britain's Sky.

"I'm the most optimistic man in the world but you don't want to be coming last all the time. This is a very pivotal year."
